Insidious: The Last Key

Insidious: The Last Key begins with a voiceover from parapsychologist Elise Rainier, who has made her career investigating and resolving people's supernatural encounters. Rainier, who is played by Lin Shaye, is an extraordinary individual gifted with the ability to sense malevolent entities. Throughout the film, it becomes clear that Elise possesses a complex and troubled past. The narrative, however, takes a different turn when a distressed phone call from the man at the center of a haunting case prompts Elise to visit him in Five Keys, New Mexico. Upon arrival, Elise, joined by her trusty assistants Specs (Tyrone Wood) and Tucker (Amanda Schulenburg), establishes a rapport with former Marine Dalton Lambert, played by Leigh Whannell, and his family. As their research unfolds, they soon realize that the eerie feelings emanating from this specific location aren't a typical case of a haunted house. Upon entering Dalton's residence, they're faced with enigmatic and inexplicable images that seem to defy all logical explanations. Elise is a perceptive paranormal investigator but also has personal connections with the house. It is revealed that the house Dalton has purchased was once his grandmother's, Catherine Rainier and it was Elise's childhood home. Throughout the investigation, as they uncover previously covered or suppressed memories, it becomes transparent that Elise's family has a history deeply entwined with the occurrences affecting Dalton's family. Initially reluctant to face these fragments of her past, Elise is driven by a sense of duty to put an end to the suffering endured by the Lambert family, even if that means confronting some of her own dark secrets. The story advances rapidly as the unsettling events escalate. Elise realizes that her subconscious has become aware of certain information which makes it more certain that what they're dealing with is a family connection that predates Dalton. They also discover the key to unlock a supernatural realm called "The Further," a world where lost souls' consciousness manifest themselves. Each manifestation by the trapped individuals indicates certain connection to her own life. For instance, she sees visions of her past, memories that her memory had repressed. With her memories now resurfacing, it progressively becomes apparent that Catherine Rainier is at the center of these eerie events. Upon further introspection, it is clear that Catherine had made a pact with 'The Key' to ensure their happiness; however, this act exacts terrible costs as 'The Key' continues to exert malevolent abilities from right within the house. The supernatural and the sinister come together as Dalton begins to acknowledge these unexplained events are connected to the darker strands of his family's history. An anxious Dalton – a former soldier – faces his fears as he and Elise must rescue his children from this terrible force which was once an offer Catherine made so that the house they once sold could provide safety and an end to their continuous pain and a means to provide for her family. The seemingly innocent life now unravels gradually into the cruel reality it has been since the beginning. Meanwhile, Insidious 5's creative approach also digs deeper at times to find glimpses of deeper stories she's neglected over years when these happenings began and their impact on those who are victimized. However, when her abilities fade due to injury, Elise enlists her longtime colleagues and apprentices Specs and Tucker in assisting in uncovering a crucial aspect that has puzzled her thus far. Her need to confront the issues plaguing the house prompts her to take tremendous risks and seek perilous options to stop the evil entities haunting the Lambert family. The eerie manifestations escalate in menace and urgency, compelling Elise and her team to rush through the haunting process. It's when the pair reach the truth: an unhinged and manipulative 'The Key' has managed to create imprints in 'The Further.' Determined that the truth of the Lambert family's hauntings is far more complex and deeply ingrained than Elise had initially anticipated, the team is confronted with what they find: 'The Key' is more capable and more terrifying than ever before.
