In a dystopian Chicago, Beatrice "Tris" Prior (Shailene Woodley) lives in a society divided into five factions, each representing a different virtue. The factions are Dauntless, the brave and fearless; Abnegation, the selfless and charitable; Amity, the peaceful and harmonious; Erudite, the intelligent and rational; and Candor, the honest and truthful. At the age of 16, all children are required to take an aptitude test to determine which faction they best fit in. Tris, a member of Abnegation, discovers that she's "Divergent," meaning she doesn't fit into any one faction. She decides to join Dauntless, a choice that puts her at risk of being discovered as Divergent, a trait that's considered a threat to society.
