Is It Anything?

Plot

In "Is It Anything?", the world seems to have already adapted to the existence of the mysterious box; however, for its new owner, Alec, everything about it makes no sense. A policy wonk at the Department of Information, Alec thrives in a reality based on rationality and order. His day begins like any other, but it takes an abrupt turn when he stumbles upon a peculiar leather-bound box at an estate sale. Alec is an avid collector of obscure artifacts, and the box stands out for its mesmerizing, old-world design and cryptic engraving. Intrigued, he buys it on a whim, thinking it will make a fascinating addition to his collection. However, as the days pass, Alec's life becomes increasingly disrupted by the mysterious box. Despite his attempts to study it, he still can't understand its purpose or the intended use of the box. As soon as he touches the box, Alec starts experiencing strange occurrences: inanimate objects move by themselves, and the atmosphere around him changes inexplicably. Seeking answers, Alec visits his colleagues at the Department of Information, who possess insight into the mysteries he can't explain. However, their questions raise even more questions, suggesting that the box may be connected to a long-forgotten government project or a top-secret program. Meanwhile, the box begins to exert an enigmatic force on Alec's friends and acquaintances. It slowly reveals pieces of their darkest secrets, shattering the facades they had built throughout their lives. As time passes, those close to Alec start developing an existential crisis, wondering if the box is manipulating them or if it's somehow releasing the truth they'd long suppressed. Alec becomes increasingly isolated, consumed by his resolve to unravel the enigma surrounding the box. Driven by an unrelenting curiosity, he presses deeper, scrutinizing every possibility and every lead. Desperate to understand the box and restore order to his reality, Alec starts frequenting underground information forums, antique shops, and thrift stores. Among those he encounters is a mystifier who claims the box is, in fact, not an inanimate object but rather a tool attuned to individual energies - drawing information, memories, or even suppressed traumas from those who touch it. However, he provides Alecs nothing but philosophical responses instead of offering concrete solutions. Disappointed yet feeling a sense of solidarity, Alec thanks the mystifier for the insightful conversation. The plot culminates when Alec has a traumatic encounter with the box, which eventually reveals an otherworldly language or code on its surface. Under intense pressure, Alec decrypts the alien-like text - and is met with shattering revelation: the mysterious object is, in fact, a container holding crucial information about the origins of humanity. Undoubtedly, the new truth leaves Alec stunned, yet what seems like a groundbreaking discovery comes with costs: more than those close to him have lost their balance as Alec has been holding vital understanding up till then; many revelations will not be possible in their current lives, leading a few to confront existential threats threatening their perception of reality. Is it anything is a haunting exploration of existence, shrouded mystery, revelation and where perhaps the individual understanding forms the foundations for societal order or perhaps not.
