Unbreakable

Plot

David Dunn, a regular man with a regular life, lives in a world where he often feels like a fish out of water. Working as a security guard at a department store, David spends his days observing people and wondering what makes them tick. On his daily commute home, a routine is disrupted by a catastrophic train accident, which leaves dozens dead and many more injured. Miraculously, David survives with just a few bruises. As news spreads about the incident, David begins to feel like something outside the realm of coincidence has happened. Struggling to understand the events that transpired, David turns to the local news for answers. It's here that he comes across Elijah Price, a man who calls himself Mr. Glass. Elijah's story begins to unravel, a tale of a life filled with fragility, not just in his physical body, but in his self-perception as well. Suffering from a genetic condition called osteogenesis imperfecta, Elijah undergoes countless surgeries and suffers numerous breaks throughout his life – his body being as fragile as glass. As fate brings David and Elijah together, it sparks a line of questioning that shakes the foundation of both men's perceptions about themselves and their place in the world. Elijah is intrigued by David's seemingly fortuitous survival from the train accident, wondering if it might mark the beginning of a new path. David, in turn, starts to question his own fragility, viewing life as either having an unbreakable component to it or being made of an entirely different, more susceptible material. Elijah invites David to meet with a doctor who's knowledgeable about his condition. However, when they arrive at the meeting, things take a darker turn as Elijah takes drastic action, shooting the doctor and causing harm to innocent civilians. Left with severe injuries, Elijah is placed under police custody, while David is put in a difficult spot. Seeing Elijah's tragic yet sorrowful eyes brings doubts about whether Elijah was the perpetrator with a wicked intention, or a person driven by a strong will to bring attention to a higher force at play. David takes it upon himself to learn more about Elijah and possibly connect him to the mystery surrounding the train accident. Delving deeper, he meets with the police detective, who shares that Elijah's claim of his fragility will be completely meaningless when exposed against the background of brutal crimes. Feeling uncertain, David chooses not to commit Elijah to a mental institution but continues the relationship cautiously. Elijah hints at a hidden agenda of solving his life's main puzzle – an overwhelming longing to comprehend the theory behind his and David's contrasting conditions of life. Convinced of a connection between them, David realizes that in the course of their encounters, he's being steered gradually towards the probability that he's a single non-fragile remaining component out there. Two incredibly opposite sides continue to exchange philosophies – two entirely reverse descriptions that drive Elijah and David closer to understanding the intricacies of the great underlying force. David ultimately believes in Elijah's claims, sharing the wonder induced by recognizing the inescapable fact – to be completely unlike a man called Elijah Price. At the same time, he also fears that at some stage, the mysteries may be a temporary escape route for his own tragic fears about losing himself entirely in the course of time.
