Killer Joe
Plot
In the gritty and intense thriller "Killer Joe", a morally ambiguous protagonist, Detective Killer Joe Cooper (played by Matthew McConaughey), navigates the dark underworld of crime and corruption. Joe is a cop who moonlights as a hitman, taking on high-risk jobs to supplement his income. The story begins with Chris Smith (Emile Hirsch), a desperate drug dealer who finds himself in a bind after his stash of drugs goes missing. Chris's mother, Sharla (Gina Gershon), is a cruel and manipulative woman who has been exploiting her son for years. When Chris learns that she has stolen his money and drugs, he becomes determined to take her down. Enter Joe, a ruthless and calculating killer with a penchant for getting what he wants. Chris offers Joe a deal: kill Sharla in exchange for a tumble with Chris's virginal sister, Dottie (Juno Temple). Joe agrees, but not before making it clear that he has no qualms about taking advantage of Chris's desperation. As the story unfolds, Joe's true nature is revealed through a series of tense and violent encounters. He proves to be a master manipulator, using his charm and cunning to get what he wants from those around him. Meanwhile, Chris becomes increasingly trapped in a web of deceit and violence, struggling to maintain control over his own life. Throughout the film, director William Friedkin ("The Exorcist", "To Live and Die in L.A.") masterfully ratchets up the tension, creating a sense of unease and uncertainty that permeates every scene. The performances are equally impressive, with Matthew McConaughey delivering a standout turn as the charismatic but deadly Joe. Ultimately, "Killer Joe" is a dark and unflinching exploration of human nature, delving into themes of morality, power, and the consequences of one's actions. With its gripping storyline, memorable characters, and expertly crafted tension, this film is a must-see for fans of crime dramas and thriller enthusiasts alike.

A top contender for black comedy of the year. William Friedkin proves he hasn't lost his touch, with a style and intensity reminiscent of his classic "The Exorcist." Matthew McConaughey is a stroke of genius, delivering a performance that skewers romantic comedies and reality TV with sadistic glee. A new cult classic in the making, and outrageously entertaining!

Matthew McConaughey from The Lincoln Lawyer? Nope, not the star here. Juno Temple as the young sister? Not the main focus either. Even Gina Gershon, who’s giving off some serious AP-level dominatrix vibes, isn’t who this movie revolves around. Nope, folks, in Killer Joe, the real VIP…is that damn KFC fried chicken!

Holy shit, this movie is unexpectedly twisted! The pornography and violence don't just assault the eyes; they warp and twist the very soul! The script is actually brilliant, crafting a winding and surprising narrative with just a handful of characters. And damn, Matthew McConaughey's performance is absolutely stunning! I'm never eating a KFC family bucket again for at least a year!

Fucking insane. Matthew McConaughey's transformation these past few years has been the stuff of cinematic legend.

This year's dark horse comedy champion! It wildly subverts expectations at every genre convention, telling grade school jokes while simultaneously showcasing nudity and graphic headshots. Yet, meticulous attention is paid to details: Chris and his dog-like whimpers, the sound of the coffee machine during Joe and Dottie's first encounter, the color coordination of Joe's shirts and eyes each time he appears. That "I'm twelve too" scene between Joe and Dottie was insanely impactful! Who am I kidding, of course I love this masochistic declaration! Matthew McConaughey, you are every masochist's dream!
