Plot

Klaus, an animated film released in 2019, tells the story of its title character, a mysterious and talented toy-maker, through a framing device involving a postman named Jesper Johansson. Jesper is a young and idealistic individual, fresh out of the Postal Academy in a fictional Scandinavian country, where he graduated at the bottom of his class. Undisciplined and unmotivated, Jesper is sent to Smeerensburg, a remote village located in the Arctic Circle, in an effort to teach him a lesson and boost his skills as a postal worker. Upon arrival, Jesper discovers that the residents of Smeerensburg are a tight-lipped and unfriendly bunch. The village is plagued by years of rivalry and hatred between the two families: the Selmas and the Krungs. Their animosity has resulted in a barren and unforgiving environment with few smiles and no letters to deliver. Frustrated and desperate to complete his duties, Jesper considers abandoning his post and returning to the safety of civilization. However, things take a turn when Jesper meets Alva Klausen, a resourceful and kind-hearted teacher who has been tasked with educating the children of Smeerensburg. Alva shares Jesper's vision of bringing people together through communication and sharing. Her efforts to improve the villagers' lives, though valiant, face resistance from the town's leaders. It is during this time that Jesper befriends Klaus Hargrev, a master carpenter, toymaker, and former postmaster who lives in a secluded cabin on the outskirts of the village. Klaus's cabin is a testament to his extraordinary skill, filled with beautifully handmade and delicate toys that he crafts with precision and care. Initially, Klaus appears to be a reclusive individual with an icy demeanor. As Jesper becomes more acclimated to Smeerensburg, he develops a deeper understanding of the town's past and the history of the Selma and Krung families. Through various flashbacks and animated sequences, the film explores Klaus's backstory, which played a pivotal role in shaping his present. Klaus, once a devoted husband and father, was abandoned by his family as an infant during the 19th-century Christmas season, leaving him feeling isolated and unwanted. This discovery sets off a chain of events that reveal Klaus's tragic past and his connection to the town's current state of affairs. The flashbacks illustrate a narrative of love, loss, and heartbreak that have made Klaus the person he is today. His isolation and emotional detachment have allowed him to create beautiful toys that bring joy to children. Through Klaus's story, Jesper begins to grasp the complexities of human emotions and relationships. The film showcases the redemptive power of connections and communication. As Klaus shares his past with Jesper, the pair develop a deep friendship and bond, and their shared experiences foster understanding between the townspeople. Jesper's initial reluctance to deliver letters gives way to a newfound enthusiasm as he works with Klaus to spread joy through the art of gift-giving. The two men devise a plan to revive the town's post office and bring the community together through a series of Christmas-themed deliveries. As they work to improve Smeerensburg's post office, Klaus's toy-making skills and stories become an integral part of the town's revival. Through their shared journey, Jesper and Klaus transcend their initial roles as adversaries and find a purpose that brings them together as friends. By embracing the true meaning of community and understanding the importance of relationships, Jesper learns to appreciate the value of his duties as a postal worker and finds a way to truly make a difference in the lives of the Smeerensburg residents. Klaus's narrative serves as a reminder that even the most broken and isolated individuals have the capacity for love and connection. As the snow-covered landscape of Smeerensburg transforms with a newfound sense of hope and camaraderie, Klaus's poignant story comes full circle. The film, directed by Sergio Pablos and produced by Lopez Rivera, brings together a talented cast of voice actors, showcasing outstanding animation, memorable characters, and a universal message of hope, joy, and human connection.
