La Leyenda de los Chaneques

Plot

In the picturesque town of Santa Cecilia, Leo San Juan, once a powerful and legendary hero, now leads a humble life as a baker with his family. Having relinquished his extraordinary abilities five years prior, Leo has been attempting to leave his adventurous past behind him, focusing on building a stable future for himself and his loved ones. However, the tranquility of their lives is disrupted when a group of mischievous spirits, known as Chaneques, begin causing trouble in the town. These playful yet troublesome entities are said to possess magical powers, which they use to play pranks on the townsfolk. As the Chaneques' antics escalate, Leo's family bakery becomes their favorite target. Despite his initial reluctance to get involved, Leo is eventually convinced by his friends and allies to return to his heroic roots and put an end to the Chaneques' mischief. With his trusty companion, a wisecracking cat named Max, by his side, Leo embarks on a thrilling adventure to capture the troublesome spirits and restore peace to Santa Cecilia. As Leo navigates this new challenge, he is forced to confront his past and rekindle his connection with his friends, who have been searching for him since his disappearance. Along the way, he also discovers that the Chaneques are not just troublemakers but are actually guardians of a sacred forest, which holds the key to their powers. As Leo delves deeper into the mystery surrounding the Chaneques and their connection to the forest, he must use his wit, courage, and determination to save the day. With the help of his friends and a few surprising allies, Leo San Juan sets out on an epic quest to capture the Chaneques, restore balance to the town, and uncover the secrets hidden within the mystical forest.

Four and a half stars. Behind the horror lies humanity, behind humanity lies politics, and behind politics lies the social structure. This layering far exceeds the framework of a confined space. The youth dies because of his lover's mistake, the mother dies because of her daughter, and the sister dies because of her brother. Coupled with the twist at the end, such irony is by no means the inclination of a typical B-movie. The reason why most zombie movies that followed went astray is because they became increasingly obsessed with the zombies' lifelike image and sensory stimulation, while abandoning the allegory of portraying characters and plots themselves.

When evaluating films like "La Leyenda de los Chaneques," it's crucial to look past the technical limitations that may arise from the era in which they were created.

While the editing becomes somewhat disjointed later on, the opening wordless chase sequence offers a glimpse into the boundless charm of black and white silent films. The ending, for its time, was quite impressively handled.

A true ancestor of zombie movies. Black and white film, classic and unsettling soundtrack, and a test of humanity. Ironically, the black character's ending is the most tragic. From then on, a supernatural force, invulnerable except for brain death, sometimes slow-moving but later exceptionally swift, driven by a primal instinct to eat flesh and with incredible bite force, decaying and malodorous, and capable of transmitting infection with a single bite, has become an enduring staple on Western big screens. 8.0
