Last Train from Gun Hill

Plot
In the late 19th century, Marshal Matt Morgan (played by Kirk Douglas) is a man driven by a sense of justice and a strong sense of right and wrong. When his wife is brutally raped and murdered by the son of an old friend, Craig Belden (played by Brad Dexter), Matt's world is turned upside down. This is not just a random crime; Craig is the son of a well-respected and wealthy cattle baron, who has a significant influence in the local community, particularly among the law enforcement and the people he does business with. As Matt learns about the heinous crime, he becomes increasingly obsessed with bringing the perpetrator to justice. He is met with resistance from the local sheriff, who is intimidated by Belden's wealth and influence, but Matt is not one to back down from a challenge. He sets out to gather evidence and build his case against Craig, despite the lack of cooperation from other officials in the area. Craig Belden is a young man with a dark and troubled past. Throughout the film, it is hinted that he has a history of violent behavior and is prone to outbursts of anger. It is clear that he is deeply disturbed and lacks empathy, which makes him a formidable and ruthless adversary for Matt. As Matt delves deeper into the investigation, he begins to uncover more about Craig's past and the factors that led him to commit such a heinous crime. He is aided in his quest by a local doctor, Dr. Canfield (played by Earl Holliman), who seems to have a personal vendetta against the Belden family and provides valuable information to help Matt in his pursuit of justice. The tension between Matt and Craig builds throughout the film, with Matt's determination to see justice done clashing with Craig's arrogance and entitlement. Their confrontation is intense and emotional, with both men pushing each other to the limit. The film's climax takes place on a train, which seems to be the last train leaving the station, hence the title. Matt has finally gathered enough evidence to take Craig into custody, but the Belden family's wealth and influence have one last trick up their sleeve. In a tense and suspenseful sequence, Matt is forced to confront a group of thugs hired by the Belden family to silence him once and for all. Matt's bravery and determination ultimately prove to be too much for the thuggish crew, and he manages to apprehend Craig and bring him to justice. The film ends with Matt reflecting on the case, realizing that the justice system has failed his wife and that he has become embroiled in a personal vendetta. The Last Train from Gun Hill is a gripping and intense film that explores themes of justice, revenge, and personal vendetta. Kirk Douglas gives a powerful performance as the vengeful marshal, and the supporting cast, including Brad Dexter as the sinister Craig Belden, bring depth and complexity to the story. The film's tense and suspenseful climax is expertly handled by the director, John Sturges, who masterfully builds the tension to a thrilling conclusion.
