Plot
In the midst of Japanese occupation, Shanghai, once a vibrant and bustling city, finds itself succumbing to the brutality and terror inflicted upon its people. The era of peace and prosperity that once defined the city has given way to one of fear and despair. Against this backdrop of oppression, Chen Zhen returns from the dead, fuelled by vengeance and a burning desire to put an end to the Japanese tyranny. The city's residents whisper in hushed tones of Chen Zhen, the legendary martial artist who single-handedly took on the Japanese forces at the Shanghai Red Mansion, only to meet a presumed demise. His disappearance left many questioning the validity of the rumors, and the once-beloved hero's legacy slowly faded into the darkness. However, the truth of Chen Zhen's fate is about to resurface. After years of training and honing his skills, Chen Zhen returns to Shanghai with an unyielding focus on bringing justice to those responsible for the suffering and death of the city's inhabitants. He seeks out his old friends, Lin and the master of the Shanghai School, and soon learns that their lives too have been forever changed by the events of the past. Lin, once strong and bold, now lies crippled, his once-sharp mind now a shadow of its former self. The Shanghai School too has been devastated by the Japanese occupation, leaving its master and student facing an uncertain future. As Chen Zhen navigates the treacherous landscape of the city, he must tread with caution, ever aware of the Japanese presence and the dangers that come with it. The ruthless and cunning Japanese officers, who have taken up residence in the very heart of the city, will stop at nothing to maintain their grip on power and crush any opposition. Through a series of flashbacks and present-day confrontations, the film delves into the complexities of Chen Zhen's past, gradually revealing the events that led to his presumed death. His journey, one of self-discovery and personal struggle, ultimately leads him back to the Shanghai Red Mansion, the site of his infamous battle against the Japanese forces.
