Little Bird

Plot
In the movie "Little Bird," 14-year-old Manu finds himself navigating a season of self-discovery as they join their grandparents in Murcia for a summer spent in the lush gardens and by the warm sea. Having been left with their grandparents by virtue of their parent's impending divorce, Manu bears the emotional weight of their family's turmoil as a multitude of firsts await them. In this idyllic but fragile environment, they are on the cusp of blossoming into adulthood, with intimate relationships and the responsibilities that follow increasingly present. Upon arrival in Murcia, Manu is immediately enveloped by the unbridled charm of their surroundings. Serene gardens bloom vibrantly, casting a kaleidoscope of color and serene tranquility over the townscape. Coupled with the waves that gently lap against the shoreline, the atmosphere proves the perfect backdrop for introspection and personal growth. As they begin to settle into this new environment, friendships and alliances start to develop. However, amidst this burgeoning panorama of relationships, it is an unexpected romance that comes to predominate Manu's experiences. While forging deeper bonds with the delightful youngsters around them, Manu's eyes are drawn toward a beautiful and free-spirited acquaintance, often referred to throughout the narrative only as the 'she' or 'neighbour'. Despite initial misgivings arising from inexperience and confusion, Manu gradually becomes increasingly captivated by their compelling neighbour. Thus, amidst the verdant expanse of Murcia's gardens, an emotional turning point proves pivotal: Manu experiences their first awakening as an adolescent toward feelings of profound intimacy and, simultaneously, stumbles upon the undeniable beauty of loving another person. This unfolding romance proves the primary compass that Manu navigates their newfound adulthood. Simultaneously falling prey to the enthralling power of love, the uncertain ebbs and flows associated with a budding romance and the pangs of an adolescence transitioning into growing pains provide an emotional tapestry reminiscent of that formative era of life. This delicate dance between trust, connection, and love sets Manu and their neighbor upon diverging paths of growth and understanding. It awakens Manu to previously unconsidered dimensions of themselves, driving them through shifting aspects of mood, emotion, and rational thinking. On one hand, with an eye toward reaching adulthood, Manu becomes exposed to pivotal, revelatory moments immersed in newfound situations. One of them connects closely with feelings of desire, another with uncertainty, then eventually transcends to what happens next – the relationship between Manu and the neighbor. But at the same time, with an eye toward Manu's ever-changing worldview and love turning into love-making when this season will end, when Manu has to part with their beloved, they also traverse more profound, life-altering epiphanies. Knowing that their loving, tender moments together with their neighbor – filled with giddy laughter, the captivating magic of Murcia, and entwined youthful dreams – are limited to an ephemeral, season-specific time frame injects anticipation, prompting Manu to consolidate the fleeting beauty of their love through memories. As the summer drizzles into its final moments, Manu stands before the momentous eventuality of leaving Murcia. With all his sense reeling in bitter-sweet memories, an ending which – sooner or later – awaits him is soon to dawn upon the sky. Though entwined in bitter-sweet emotion, Manu is now more spiritually mature and aware, enriched by every minute partaken within Murcia, much empowered after his coming of age. When the season fades, it becomes a bittersweet moment in Manu's new-found maturity, but they now have with them fundamental powers they gained with friends and, above all, the one they so fervently fell in love with. It's not just the beautiful Murcia or their loved one that now lives deeply in their memory; the transformative encounter and growth Manu experienced in this enchanting, seaside sanctuary stand forever, as Manu ultimately embarks on the next phase of their life.

Honestly, Alison's beauty and the artistic cinematography were the only things that kept me watching. I really didn't enjoy the plot where the main character is constantly creating drama. With such a huge difference in values, it's hard to believe Alison could tolerate it.

Without sufficient buildup, you'll just find yourself annoyed by the blonde lead's endless, reckless decisions.

Three and a half stars. When the chips are down, you'll see who's really cool. Kid, you haven't even seen what life's really like.
