Live by Night

Plot

Set in the 1930s, Ben Affleck's directorial effort, Live by Night, is an adaptation of Dennis Lehane's novel of the same name. The story revolves around Joe Coughlin, a former Boston police officer turned outlaw. Joe, played by Ben Affleck, returns from World War I with a newfound appreciation for the American dollar and a taste for the dark side of life. He quickly becomes embroiled in organized crime and establishes himself as a formidable figure in the Boston underworld. As the story unfolds, Joe's reputation and wealth grow, but with that comes increased scrutiny from rival gangsters and the Boston police department. In a bid to expand his operations and escape the heat, Joe relocates to Ybor City, a vibrant and ethnically diverse neighborhood in Tampa, Florida, during the Prohibition era. The humid climate and balmy weather provide a stark contrast to the cold, damp streets of Boston. Upon arrival in Tampa, Joe discovers a new and potentially lucrative market for his bootlegging operation. He establishes alliances with local gangsters and establishes a foothold in the city. However, Joe's presence is not without its challenges. He must contend with a rival gang, led by a man named Manny, who seeks to eliminate Joe and take control of the local bootlegging operation for himself. One of the most formidable foes in Joe's life is a group known as the Ku Klux Klan. The KKK has a long history of racial tension and hate, but in Live by Night, the focus is more on their opposition to organized crime and bootlegging. Joe's involvement with the local underworld puts him in direct conflict with the KKK, who seek to drive out 'outsiders' and maintain their grip on power. Throughout the film, Joe must confront his own morals and sense of loyalty as he navigates the cutthroat world of organized crime. He finds himself drawn to Gracia Dolls, an Italian immigrant and local nightclub owner, played by Sienna Miller. Their relationship is complicated, and Gracia's connections to the Italian mafia add more tension to Joe's already precarious position. Meanwhile, Joe's estranged brother, Patrick, played by Chris Cooper, is a detective with the Boston police department who remains obsessed with solving a murder case linked to Joe's past. The brothers' complicated relationship adds an emotional depth to the story, as Joe struggles to reconcile his love for his brother with his illicit activities. As the stakes escalate, Joe becomes embroiled in a bitter conflict between rival gangs and the KKK. A series of violent confrontations leaves several gang members and law enforcement officials dead, and Joe is forced to go on the run. In a desperate bid to protect himself and those he cares about, Joe must decide whether to stand by his morals or bend to the harsh realities of the underworld. In the end, Joe's journey becomes a cautionary tale about the dangers of living outside the law. His story highlights the darker aspects of human nature and the devastating consequences of allowing greed and ambition to consume one's life. The film's conclusion is both tragic and thought-provoking, inviting viewers to reflect on the costs of Joe's pursuit of power and wealth. Live by Night is a gripping, atmospheric thriller that offers a nuanced portrayal of the Prohibition era and its complexities.
