Mary Poppins

Plot

In the charming and whimsical world of 1910 London, Mr. George Banks, a wealthy banker, finds himself at a crossroads. His wife, Winifred, has recently passed away, leaving him to care for their two young children, Jane and Michael. Overwhelmed by the responsibility, Mr. Banks struggles to connect with his children, relying on his strict and disciplined approach to upbringing. However, as the days turn into weeks, it becomes clear that this method is not as effective as he had hoped. Jane, an intelligent and creative eight-year-old, often finds herself lost in her own world of imagination and fantasy, while Michael, a mischievous and energetic six-year-old, constantly tests the limits, searching for attention and affirmation from his often-absent father. The tension between Mr. Banks and his children is palpable, with each trying to understand the other's perspective without avail. In an attempt to find the perfect nanny, Mr. Banks resorts to an advertisement in the newspaper, and after a series of inadequate candidates, he is surprised by a visit from the enchanting Mary Poppins. This practically perfect nanny brings with her a whirlwind of magic and wonder, as if flown in on the wind. With her air of confidence, poise, and charm, Mary Poppins quickly captures the attention of both Mr. Banks and his children, eventually winning them over with her unique approach to childcare and guiding her charges towards self-discovery and independence. As Mary Poppins settles into the Banks household, she sets about making changes in the lives of her young wards. Jane, drawn to the sea, is encouraged by Mary Poppins to express her creative side through dance and imagination, while Michael, who initially struggles to accept Mary Poppins' stern expectations, is gradually won over by her kindness and wisdom. Through a series of fantastical escapades and exercises in nurturing self-confidence, Mary Poppins awakens Jane and Michael to the world around them, helping them to see beyond the confines of their narrow existence. With her knowledge of the sciences and her artistic flair, Mary Poppins manages to bring out the best in each child, coaxing them out of their shells and into the world of possibility. Meanwhile, Mr. Banks finds himself at a personal crossroads. Clinging to his rigid worldview and adherence to traditional bank protocol, he must confront his own emotional numbness and sense of purpose. Mary Poppins' transformation of his children prompts him to re-evaluate his priorities, making him realize that money, position, and security, though important, are not as vital as love, relationships, and connection. As the days pass, Mary Poppins proves that even the most ordinary situations can be extraordinary, that even the most unexpected person can make a lasting impact, and that 'anything can happen if you let it'. But after a series of trials, temptations, and spiritual experiences, Mary Poppins eventually disappears into thin air, leaving the Banks family with memories that they will treasure forever. Though the loss is palpable, the lessons learned have a profound effect on Mr. Banks, who begins to rediscover his own creative spark, embracing a newfound appreciation for values and priorities beyond material wealth. Reuniting with his children, now aware of his father's vulnerable human side, he is able to reconnect and understand them more fully. Ultimately, the legacy of Mary Poppins' visit to the Banks household is that love and kindness can heal wounds that might have seemed permanent, that acceptance and compassion can unlock our deepest human potential, and that the impossible can be made possible through a little bit of faith and imagination. In the world of Mary Poppins, even the most practical and unimaginative individual can have a practically perfect nanny step into their life, imparting wisdom, charm, and a pinch of magic to forever change the course of their lives.

★★★★½. An early classic. Reminiscent of "The Sound of Music."

There's hardly anything more enchanting. *Mary Poppins* is practically perfect, yet endearingly imperfect. To dislike *Mary Poppins* would be simply inhuman. You're left with a heart full of delightful whimsy. Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!

From a modern perspective, the musical numbers feel a bit oversaturated. Disney employed all the VFX technology of the time to recreate the "hidden marvels in everyday life" atmosphere depicted in the novel. The chalk drawing sequence, the cathedral's artistry, and the rooftop dance are truly breathtaking. Although my favorite part, the zoo scene, didn't make the cut, the episodes included perfectly match the theme of "joy." Mary Poppins's adorable arrogance and self-love are truly charming.

There's only one Mary Poppins, but countless unhappy children in the world. Most children grow up and abandon their fantastical imaginations, becoming just another face in the crowd of mundane, melancholic adults leading colorless, tasteless lives. The truth is, whether Mary Poppins exists or not, the most important thing for children is to hold onto those dazzling fantasies and let them play out again and again in their minds.
