Maze Runner: The Death Cure

Plot
Maze Runner: The Death Cure takes place in a dystopian future where the world has been ravaged by a deadly disease known as the Flare, which turns humans into violent, zombie-like creatures. Thomas, played by Dylan O'Brien, is the protagonist of the story, who along with his fellow Gladers, has been trapped in the mysterious maze created by the sinister organization WCKD (World in Catastrophe: Killzone Experiment Department). The maze, with its shifting paths and deadly creatures, has been designed by WCKD to keep its inhabitants, including Thomas, captive and under their control. As the series progresses, Thomas and his friends lead by the gruff and trusting Gally, have pieced together information that reveals WCKD's true intentions: to control and manipulate its subjects to develop a cure for the Flare. This revelation fuels Thomas's desire to find the exit and uncover the truth about the maze and WCKD's sinister operations. In the third installment of the series, Maze Runner: The Death Cure, Thomas sets out on his final mission to infiltrate the infamous Last City, which is WCKD's heavily fortified stronghold. With his closest friends including Newt, Jorge, Brenda, and Minho, Thomas devises a plan to rescue their captured comrades and put an end to WCKD's tyranny. Their journey begins with a perilous escape from their compound, where they gather vital information and discover that the cure for the Flare exists within the walls of the Last City. With this crucial knowledge, Thomas and his crew must navigate treacherous landscapes, evade roaming Flare-infected, and fight off other deadly adversaries to reach their destination. Upon arrival at the Last City, Thomas and his team encounter new obstacles and friends who join their cause. Among these is Lawrence, a mysterious and resourceful ally with insider knowledge of WCKD's inner workings. Together, they devise a strategy to infiltrate the city's heavily guarded zones and locate the elusive cure. However, Thomas's plan is threatened when Newt, his trusted friend and ally, is bitten by a Flare-infected individual. Fearful of being unable to save Newt from succumbing to the Flare, Thomas makes an urgent decision that compromises the entire mission. He tasks Brenda with taking Newt to safety, leaving the main group to navigate the Last City alone. Meanwhile, Thomas's relationship with Brenda, his loyal friend and confidante, deepens as they form an unspoken bond based on mutual respect and trust. This connection foreshadows their connection, however now deeper and emotionally, but still as unreciprocated as before, also evolves the complexity of the characters. As the stakes rise, Thomas's group faces numerous life-threatening situations, including a particularly intense confrontation with the WCKD commandant, Ava Paige. Determined to protect her prized experiment, Paige reveals that the cure exists, but at a terrible cost: it can only be developed through the capture and immunization of one individual. In the climactic final act, the very purpose of the maze and WCKD's experiment is revealed. The cure, it turns out, comes at a price: the health and feelings of the final maze runner, an individual whose immunization would provide the necessary genetic material to develop the cure. Movingly, Lena, the sister of Thomas, was in fact an experiment to find a suitable candidate for the final immunization of the death cure to be made possible by Thomas at the costs of his own sanity, leaving Mr. Cooper and Brenda to search for him with help from Brenda's former allies. In the end, determined to save the world from the Flare and ensure the survival of his friends, Thomas makes a fateful decision: he volunteers for the cure, knowing full well that this will put an end to WCKD's plans and free his friends from their maze prison. While the audience may question several plot elements, the bonds forged by Thomas and his companions suggest a hopeful end to this epic tale of suspense and grit.

The action is definitely leveled up from the second movie; maze? What maze? This installment takes the crown for most plot holes in the series. Seriously: What kind of bomb can instantly demolish a wall hundreds of feet high? How does someone survive a car plummeting from that height without a scratch? What kind of reinforced glass shatters with a single hit? The supposedly impenetrable headquarters is infiltrated and escaped with laughable ease. And that ending – leveling an entire city to save a few dozen people while killing tens of thousands – is it dystopia or just plain misanthropic?

Only those chosen by fate can survive, all the efforts of others are in vain. This movie is essentially pessimistic, offering little hope. The capable and the incapable are all consumed by self-interest, and in the end, the only one who wanted to save everyone dies. I truly love Teresa, I wholeheartedly ship Teresa and Thomas as a couple.

Some say this film lacks a maze, but I strongly disagree. Aren't the director's, writers', protagonist's, and antagonist's thought processes mazes themselves? They're labyrinths with only entrances and no exits; once you're in, you're stuck. Until the very last moment, you have no clue what they're thinking, and even after watching, you're still left wondering what was going on in their heads.

Both the second and third installments explain the mysteries behind the first and continue the story's development, but they stray further and further from the maze theme, and there aren't any brilliant new ideas. Thomas's harem is constantly losing members; he saves one, then loses a few, saves one, then loses a few. My heart aches QAQ.

The deaths feel forced and contrived. Newt's demise comes down to mere minutes when they could have administered the serum much earlier! And Teresa, she just needed to make one last leap but instead stood there waiting for her death? Plus, rescuing the kids using hooks to lift them away feels repetitive and lacks originality. The joyful and peaceful ending feels incredibly out of place. When you think about it, they didn't really accomplish anything significant. The Flare is still spreading, the people who could create the cure are gone, and what can the main character possibly achieve with just one vial of serum?
