Plot

Medieval is a 2022 historical action drama film written and directed by Petr Jákl, which explores the life and times of Jan Žižka, a legendary Czech warrior and the commander of the Hussite forces in the 15th century. The film begins in 1419 in a turbulent Prague, amidst the flames of the Great Peasants' Revolt. The Hussite movement, founded by Jan Hus, a theologian who challenged the Catholic Church, gains momentum, and soon the entire city is in chaos. The powerful Church and the Holy Roman Empire attempt to quell the uprising, dispatching a large army to quash the heretics. This is where our protagonist, Jan Žižka (played by Charles Dance's son, Matěj Hádek, and voiced by Charles Dance, who also had a role in the movie), comes into the picture. A one-eyed veteran, Žižka earns the respect of the people with his bravery, strength, and battle prowess. He joins the Hussite forces and quickly rises through the ranks due to his tactical genius and unyielding determination. Žižka sets his sights on confronting and defeating the Teutonic Knights, a formidable force led by the ruthless Commander Heinz (played by Ivan Barnev). The scene unfolds with Žižka riding into battle, his war cry thundering across the battlefield, as his men cheer him on. With his unwavering leadership, Žižka rallies his army and launches a surprise attack, taking the enemy off guard and gaining the upper hand. As the war rages on, Žižka faces opposition from multiple fronts: the Holy Roman Empire, the Teutonic Knights, and even his own people, who doubt his leadership. Despite these challenges, Žižka remains unyielding and steadfast, driven by his conviction in the cause of the Hussites. One of the most pivotal scenes in the movie occurs when Žižka leads a daring charge against the enemy lines, on horseback and firing a cannon with his one eye, in an effort to breach the heavily fortified walls. His bravery in the face of overwhelming odds inspires his men, and they follow him unhesitatingly into the heart of the enemy camp. Throughout the film, Žižka's relationships with his comrades-in-arms are on full display. He forms a close bond with Štěpán (played by Aňa Geislerová), a skilled healer who becomes his confidante and a strong voice of reason in times of turmoil. Žižka's unwavering loyalty to his men is evident in his decision to sacrifice his own well-being for the greater good. The movie's climax revolves around the famous Battle of Tachov, in which Žižka and his forces engage the combined armies of the Holy Roman Empire and the Teutonic Order. The stage is set for an epic confrontation: thousands of soldiers clash on the battlefield, with cannons, muskets, and traditional medieval warfare techniques on full display. In the ensuing chaos, Žižka uses his tactical prowess to great effect, launching a series of daring maneuvers that leave the enemy reeling. The battle rages on, with both sides suffering heavy losses, until Žižka emerges victorious, his men cheering him as he rides triumphantly into the fray. Medieval is an action-packed account of one of the most pivotal figures in Czech history, a true warrior and leader whose name has become synonymous with courage and bravery. By weaving a compelling narrative around Žižka's life and times, the film brings to life a pivotal chapter in the history of the Czech Republic, an era marked by upheaval, revolution, and the struggle for freedom.
