Mesa de regalos

Plot
In the charming Mexican comedy, "Mesa de regalos," Nicolás and Antonia, two close friends since childhood, are struggling to find their place in the world. As they approach their mid-twenties, their friends and acquaintances have seemingly achieved emotional and professional stability. Feeling left behind and uncertain about their own futures, they confide in each other about the emptiness they feel. One evening, while attending yet another wedding, the two friends hit upon a seemingly brilliant idea. Tired of watching others reap the benefits of their hard-earned gifts, they devise a scheme to get ahead. The plan, simple yet bold, is to stage their own fake wedding and then abandon each other at the altar. They reason that since the wedding is a public declaration of their "secret love," the guests will be so ashamed of having supported a non-existent relationship that they will be too embarrassed to claim their gifts, which the friends can then split and use to fund their own dreams. Excited by the prospect of finally getting the financial freedom they crave, Nicolás and Antonia begin to put their plan into action. They start by telling their friends and family about their "secret love" and their plans to get married. Everyone is thrilled at the news, and soon the wedding preparations are underway. The couple selects a venue, a wedding planner, and even starts a countdown on social media to build up the suspense. However, as the big day approaches, unexpected feelings start to surface. Nicolás and Antonia, who had convinced themselves that their friendship would be enough to sustain them through the charade, find themselves developing genuine emotions for each other. They start to see themselves in each other in a different light and begin to question whether their plan was wise after all. Meanwhile, the preparations for the wedding continue unabated. The couple selects a beautiful dress and a dashing tuxedo for Nicolás; they choose a delicious wedding cake and even select a bouquet of flowers to match the wedding theme. As the date of the wedding draws closer, the excitement builds up in both Nicolás and Antonia. However, their emotions are on a collision course with their carefully laid plans. One of Nicolás's best friends, Carlos, seems to sense that something is amiss. He is skeptical about the couple's intentions and confides in his girlfriend, Ana. Ana, however, is initially oblivious to the scheme and thinks that the couple is truly in love. As the wedding day draws closer, Carlos's concerns grow, and he starts to feel uneasy about participating in a charade that could have serious consequences for his friend. On the day of the wedding, tensions are high as Nicolás and Antonia's friends and family gather to celebrate what they believe is a true love story. The couple exchanges vows, rings, and a romantic kiss, but just as the ceremony is about to reach its climax, Antonia hesitates. She looks into Nicolás's eyes, and for a moment, it seems like she will go through with the initial plan. However, something inside her changes, and she starts to feel a pang of guilt for having deceived her friends and her loved ones. In the end, Antonia decides not to stand Nicolás at the altar, but her actions are not entirely driven by guilt or a desire to uphold her end of the bargain. Instead, she chooses to leave Nicolás standing, but not before expressing her true feelings for him. Nicolás is taken aback by her words, and for the first time, he begins to see Antonia in a different light. As the couple parts ways, Nicolás is overcome with emotions. He has fallen for Antonia, and the realization is both exhilarating and terrifying. As the guests begin to disperse and the wedding reception comes to an end, Nicolás approaches Antonia, who has been standing by the door, waiting for him. They share a tender moment, and it seems like their friendship has finally blossomed into something more. In the final scene, Nicolás and Antonia are shown walking hand in hand, ready to face the future together. The camera pans out, and we see the wedding gifts that were intended to be the couple's prize for the charade lying on the "Mesa de regalos" (Gift Table), untouched and unclaimed. The friends and acquaintances are now aware of the ruse that Nicolás and Antonia had staged, but instead of ridiculing them, they offer their support and congratulations to the newly-in-love couple. The ending is a heartwarming commentary on the power of love and relationships to transform even the most cynical of intentions.
