Mountainhead

Plot

Mountainhead is a 2021 Australian horror film that tells the story of a group of high-rolling billionaires, known as the group "The League," who gather at a remote lodge in the mountains to discuss business and unwind. The League is comprised of eccentric and enigmatic individuals, each with their own unique personalities and obsessions. At the center of the group is Ryan, a charismatic and ruthless billionaire who has made his fortune through a combination of cunning and luck. Ryan brings his extended friends together for a weekend stay at the secretive, luxury lodge, which is hidden deep within the Australian mountains. As the weekend progresses, the wealthy guests engage in lavish parties and indulgent activities, such as big-game hunting and lavish feasting. However, their idyllic getaway takes an ominous turn when the group stumbles upon an unknown threat on the property. It transpires that the lodge is teeming with mysterious creatures that at first seem like an ordinary deer, only to later confirm to be carnivorous, hostile creatures. The group soon realizes that the creatures are a result of some scientific experiment gone wrong. They appear to have no relation to any local or indigenous species. Panic sets in as they become the prey for the unpredictable beasts. The guest must confront their own fears, trust in each other, and in themselves as they fight to survive the creatures. As the body count rises, tensions and paranoia escalate, causing the group dynamics to become increasingly turbulent. The once-welcoming environment turns into a death trap where everyone becomes suspicious of one another and wonders who will make it out alive. This sets off a rapid unraveling of relationships within the group. The wealthy group members frantically work to uncover the truth behind the lodge's strange inhabitants, but their relentless hunt for an answer leads them down a bleak and deadly path. It becomes clear that their own privilege, power, and resources are not enough to keep them safe, and that in this desperate situation, everyone is on equal footing with the deadly creatures. It is clear that Mountainhead explores the class divide and the contrast between the haves and have-nots, drawing parallels between the social hierarchy of the characters and the hierarchy that exists in the natural world, challenging the preconceived notions the wealthy adopt when observing the world.
