Muthu

Plot

Muthu is a 1995 Indian Tamil-language musical drama film, directed by K.S. Ravikumar and produced by K. Bhagyaraj. The movie is loosely based on the Hollywood film "Coming to America," but with a rich, vibrant culture-specific backdrop. It revolves around the story of Muthu, a charismatic and well-respected servant of the wealthy zamindar, Raja Malayasimman. Muthu is not only Raja's servant but also a skilled charioteer who handles the family's vehicles with incredible precision and finesse. As the story unfolds, Muthu and Raja Malayasimman, whose life seems perfect, find themselves falling head over heels for the same woman - Ranganathiamma, an actress and a skilled Bharatanatyam dancer who has come to their city to perform. Raja, with the help of Muthu, decides to transform himself into a prince from a foreign land called "Azerbaijan" and pose as a potential groom for the charming actress. Muthu, not missing a beat, decides to pose as Raja and pretend to fall in love with the actress, all the while keeping up the facade to help Raja win her heart. As Raja's life takes a dramatic turn, Muthu finds himself caught in an impossible situation where he falls deeply in love with Ranganathiamma while pretending to be Raja. Ranganathiamma's love for Raja and her genuine affection for Muthu create a web of emotions that confuse both the protagonists. This complicated setup provides a perfect backdrop for the hilarious situations that unfold as both Raja and Muthu navigate the world of the actress, all while hiding their true identities. As Raja's charade progresses, he faces increasing difficulty in keeping up the pretense, making it all the more challenging for him to win Ranganayaki's heart. Muthu, too, finds it increasingly difficult to keep up the facade, given the growing emotions he develops for the actress. Muthu's deep sense of loyalty, however, keeps him bound to his duty of being a servant, making it all the more difficult for him to choose between his love for Ranganathiamma and his devotion to Raja. The story sees its share of twists and turns, with a host of intriguing characters added to the mix. A rival group, led by the cunning Ambalathar, who is Raja's maternal uncle, emerges on the scene with the sole intention of capturing control of the family's property. Raja's love for Ranganathiamma provides the perfect ammunition for Ambalathar to execute his sinister plan. Throughout the movie, the music, a blend of traditional and folk influences, adds to the drama and romance. A.R. Rahman's music for the flick is memorable, and the songs have been etched in the memories of millions for their catchy beats and lyrics. In the end, loyalty, love, and family duty play out their roles in creating a cinematic spectacle that brings together an array of emotions on screen. As the story unfolds, Raja is forced to make a choice between his duty to his family and his love for Ranganathiamma. The movie, with its mix of humor, drama, and romance, showcases the versatility of Kamal Haasan, who not only acted in the film but also composed its music. Muthu, with its vibrant backdrop and engaging storyline, became a box office hit and earned praise from both critics and audiences alike. It remains one of Kamal's most memorable movies and one of the most popular Tamil films ever made.
