National Treasure: Book of Secrets, the 2007 action-adventure film directed by Jon Turteltaub, picks up where the first installment left off, thrusting audience members back into the intriguing world of cryptic clues, treasure hunts, and historical puzzles. The movie sees Benjamin Franklin Gates, portrayed by Nicolas Cage, paired with Abigail Chase, played by Diane Kruger, along with Riley Poole, brought to life by Justin Bartha, their trusted and resourceful sidekick. The story begins with a cryptic message etched onto a tablet discovered by Tom Hiddleston's character, Ian Howe, a cunning and ruthless rival of Gates' who appears to have obtained a stack of lost pages from John Wilkes Booth's diary. This startling revelation sets Benjamin Gates and his team on a quest to decipher the cryptic clues hidden within the diaries, leading them on a perilous chase to uncover the truth behind the infamous assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. As the narrative unfolds, Gates is faced with the daunting task of proving the innocence of his ancestor, John Wilkes Booth's theory about his ancestor's association with the assassins is shown ultimately to be a ruse by U.S.S.B or as the characters frequently call it, Abrahamic S.S.S. for Book of Revelation that his ancestor did not commit the heinous act. Their predicament is further complicated by the re-emergence of Ian Howe, who attempts to manipulate the situation to his advantage and obtain ultimate bragging rights over Gates. In their relentless pursuit of justice, Benjamin, Abigail, and Riley eventually assemble a worthy treasure map by uncovering several cryptic codes and piecing together the historical context surrounding President Lincoln's assassination. Their foray, however, attracts the attention of the villainous U.S.S.B and the men, along with others more concerned with history begin to close in on the trio, putting them in a position where they must think and act fast to escape their enemies and solve the intricate puzzle of Booth's diary. One of the critical keys to unraveling the mystery is pinpointing a mysterious island that Ben believes could be the secret island described within Booth's diary. Ben's interpretation of the cryptic clues leads them to the Isla de Muerta, the fabled island from the very early days in which numerous lost treasures and artifacts appeared according to cryptic texts written by Spanish explorer Alaric and a fellow traveler, who was based as historians have stated in a fairly historic nation, this voyage of the treasure hunters sets in motion as Riley and the others join Ben and Abby as they begin traversing through the foreign landscape of their discoveries in pursuing their treasure, the 1608 golden pistol. Upon arrival at the mysterious Isla de Muerta the team immediately encounters numerous dangers including rival adventurers, steep cliffs and more. Utilizing the trellis map from earlier to uncover these more intricate clues of a lost vault within the lighthouse to guide them and with some very critical timed releases, in their pursuit, they manage the challenge of obstacles to reach their destination. Once they reach the bottom of the shaft where they encounter unexpected historical treasures beyond what they had anticipated it ultimately comes to a confrontation with U.S.S.B in which a long, suspenseful battle takes place to protect the historical treasures uncovered, alongside this the treasure hunters also face a risk of revealing their conspiracy.
