Nobody's Perfect

Plot

Nobody's Perfect is a 1970 American comedy film directed by Claude Kerven, starring Leif Garrett, Donna Wilkes, and Johnny Whitaker. The movie follows the story of Steve (played by Leif Garrett), a college freshman who has a promising tennis career ahead of him. However, his life takes a drastic turn when he falls head over heels in love with Shelly (played by Donna Wilkes), also a talented tennis player. Steve's infatuation with Shelly has an immediate impact on his life. He finds himself struggling with everyday tasks, including eating and sleeping. His grades start to slip, and he loses focus in his studies. His performance on the tennis court is affected as well, leading to a meeting with the coach, who is not pleased with Steve's recent behavior. As Steve's situation worsens, his resourceful and somewhat quirky friend, Jeff, steps in to help him. Jeff suggests an unconventional solution - to turn Steve into a woman. Jeff's plan is to disguise Steve as a female to gain Shelly's attention, which he hopes will eventually lead to Steve and Shelly getting together. Steve is initially hesitant and unwilling to go along with Jeff's plan. However, desperate to win Shelly's affection, he eventually agrees to give it a try. With Jeff's guidance, Steve begins to transform into a woman, adopting a feminine name, voice, and even a new wardrobe. As Steve (now as a woman, referred to as "Sarah") navigates his new identity, he faces numerous challenges. He must learn to adjust to the social norms and expectations of being a woman, which includes walking, talking, and behaving in ways that are stereotypically feminine. Despite the initial awkwardness, Steve/Sarah starts to gain attention from Shelly, who is oblivious to Steve's true identity. Jeff's plan seems to be working, and Steve's hopes for a relationship with Shelly start to rise. Meanwhile, Steve's friends and classmates are both confused and amused by his transformation, leading to some hilarious moments in the movie. However, as Steve's transformation progresses, he finds himself becoming more and more immersed in his new identity. He begins to question whether he is truly comfortable in his own skin, or if he is simply pretending to be someone he's not. This internal conflict adds a layer of depth to the movie, exploring themes of identity, self-discovery, and the complexities of human relationships. As the story unfolds, Steve's disguise becomes more and more convincing, leading to some unexpected situations and comedic misunderstandings. Along the way, he must rely on his wit, charm, and loyalty to friends to navigate his new reality. In the end, Steve's transformation, although initially intended to gain Shelly's attention, ultimately leads to unexpected consequences. He must confront the reality of his actions and decide whether to continue masquerading as a woman or to reveal his true identity to Shelly and risk losing her forever. The movie ends on a humorous and lighthearted note, with Steve ultimately deciding to reveal his true identity to Shelly. However, this revelation does not lead to the breakup everyone expected. Instead, Steve's honesty and vulnerability allow for a genuine connection with Shelly, who is touched by his willingness to be himself, flaws and all. Nobody's Perfect is a charming and entertaining film that explores themes of identity, relationships, and self-discovery in a lighthearted and humorous way. The movie features a talented young cast, memorable performances, and some genuinely funny moments that make it a delightful watch.
