Oasis

Plot

The movie Oasis is a thought-provoking science fiction film based on Michel Faber's acclaimed novel, 'The Book Of Strange New Things'. The story revolves around Peter Leigh, a devout Scottish chaplain who is recruited by a prominent conglomerate, USCS (United States Colonial Services), to travel to the distant planet Oasgs (referred to simply as 'Oasis' throughout the film). Upon arriving on this remote world, Peter becomes acutely aware of its peculiarities and its vast, seemingly endless desert landscape. Oasis is home to a diverse mix of alien species that live in harmony with one another. USCS's primary purpose for deploying Peter to this planet is to provide spiritual guidance and support to the human colonists who have arrived at Oasis. As Peter delves deeper into the lives of both the alien inhabitants and the human settlers, he discovers that the latter live in stark contrast to the peaceful coexistence displayed by the planet's native population. The humans are wracked with anxiety, fear, and internal conflict, their struggles fueled by tensions stemming from their vastly different cultural backgrounds. Peter, ever the devoted Christian, sees an opportunity to share his faith with the human colonists and thus becomes instrumental in establishing a church on the planet. He dedicates himself to his duties as a chaplain and becomes deeply invested in supporting and guiding the people under his care. However, as Peter becomes more entrenched in the lives of the colonists, he starts to experience intense loneliness, coupled with feelings of isolation. His relationship with his wife, Beatrice, back on Earth becomes increasingly strained due to the prolonged distance between them. The disconnection and sense of disorientation that grips Peter threaten to disrupt the harmony and balance he is working so fervently to establish among the humans. One of the key elements of the story revolves around the relationships that Peter forms with individuals in Oasis. His interactions with the alien inhabitants are both complex and poignant, with Peter struggling to comprehend their distinct customs and worldview. On the other hand, Peter finds himself struggling to bridge the gaps between the human colonists, all of whom have unique and deeply ingrained personalities. He becomes especially drawn to the character of Chris, a quiet but introspective individual who displays a keen intellect and deep empathy for the alien species. Through Peter's relationships with Chris and the alien inhabitants, he begins to understand the intricate and deeply intertwined nature of the Oasis ecosystem. This epiphanic realization is accompanied by a profound shift in Peter's worldview, one that prompts him to re-evaluate his role as a chaplain and to question the values he previously held. In its final act, the movie Oasis presents viewers with a thought-provoking examination of the human condition. As Peter's world becomes increasingly fragmented, he is confronted with a series of unanswerable questions regarding the true nature of faith, the role of spirituality in a world filled with uncertainty, and the possibility that the human condition might be far more nuanced and complex than he ever could have imagined. Ultimately, the film presents a haunting and contemplative exploration of what it means to be human in a vast and seemingly indifferent universe. It leaves the viewer pondering the existential implications of living in a world where our connections with others are tenuous at best, and encourages a re-examination of the ways in which we strive to find meaning and understanding in our own lives.
