Plot

Overboard, a 1987 American romantic comedy film, directed by Garry Marshall, offers a hilarious portrayal of societal class disparities and unexpected change. The movie revolves around Dean (played by Matt Walsh in the 2018 remake, and Kurt Russell in the 1987 version) Martin, a ruthless and egotistical millionaire who owns a luxurious yacht. Dean has an uncanny ability to manipulate and belittle those beneath him, including his employees. At a dock in Mexico, where Dean has docked his enormous yacht, Dean hires a local handyman, Jose (played by Chevy Chase in the 1987 version, and Eugenio Derbez in the 2018 version) to do several maintenance tasks. Despite his wealth, Dean is a selfish, egotistical, and inconsiderate employer who consistently underpays and overworks Jose and his other employees. One day, while Dean is swimming laps around his yacht, Jose, fed up with his constant humiliation, intentionally throws Dean into the water. The scene, captured by a group of stunned tourists, becomes a viral sensation in the local town. Dean's subsequent attempts to exact revenge on Jose are thwarted by the fact that the man he is trying to bully has been suffering from amnesia, brought on by the accident in the water. Upon returning to his home, Dean finds that Jose has disguised himself as his fiancée (played by Goldie Hawn in the 1987 version, and Anna Faris in the 2018 version), a woman with the same name. However, Jose has no recollection of his previous life, including his relationship with Dean. Dean decides to take advantage of this situation and invites Jose to come to his home to be treated for his supposed amnesia. As Jose spends more time with Dean, he discovers that he is the owner of the yacht and has access to unlimited wealth and material possessions, which initially delights and flabbergasts him. Initially, Jose uses his newfound position to live the life he has always desired, accumulating wealth and indulging in his desires. However, he soon realizes that he has become just as selfish and inconsiderate as his employer. As Jose navigates through his new identity, he begins to realize the errors of his past ways and starts to question his values and life choices. Under the guise of Dean's fiancée, Jose develops a new perspective and gradually transforms into a more empathetic and caring person. A bond gradually develops between Jose and Dean, who undergoes significant character development as the story progresses. Despite the initial animosity between the two, they start to develop feelings for each other, which was the unintended consequence of Dean's attempts to use Jose as part of his game plan to avenge himself. The movie ultimately portrays a classic case of opposites attracting as Jose, initially the lower-class individual, and Dean, a ruthless millionaire, form an unlikely bond. The dynamic couple navigates an array of comedic misadventures and hilarious situations, which provide much of the comedic relief in the movie. As Jose and Dean develop a deeper understanding of one another and of themselves, the movie offers a valuable social commentary on the impact of wealth and privilege on the world around us. Their blossoming relationship encourages Dean to change his ways and treat those beneath him with respect, compassion, and genuine kindness. In the end, the movie provides an empowering message for marginalized communities, emphasizing that people from all walks of life can find common ground and change one another's lives for the better. As the title Overboard hints, sometimes a drastic turn of events can lead to an unexpected, yet positive transformation.
