Palm Trees in the Snow

Plot

Clarence is a young woman who lives in the snowy mountains of Huesca, Spain, in 2003. Her uncle, Kilian, a wealthy and well-respected businessman, is planning to travel to the island of Fernando Poo in Equatorial Guinea, a tropical location where he spent his youth. However, Kilian suffers a heart attack and is no longer able to make the trip. Kilian gives Clarence a set of documents and a map of the island, telling her that she has to go there in his place. Clarence is hesitant at first, but eventually decides to travel to Fernando Poo, driven by both her sense of obligation to her uncle and her own curiosity about the island and her family's past. During her journey, Clarence encounters a variety of characters who teach her about the island's complex history and culture. Equatorial Guinea, a country located near the equator, has a rich African heritage, but also a history of colonialism and conflict. The island of Fernando Poo, now known as Bioko, is one of the main islands in the country and played an important role in the colonial era. Upon her arrival on the island, Clarence meets various people who tell her about her father's and her uncle's experiences growing up there. They share stories about the harsh realities of growing up as colonizers, the relationships they formed with the local people, and the struggles they faced. Clarence also learns about the history of the island and its people, including the impact of colonialism on the indigenous communities. As Clarence delves deeper into her family's past, she begins to understand the complexities of her uncle's personality and the events that shaped him into the person he is today. She also starts to unravel the story of her father, Jacobo, who went missing several years ago under mysterious circumstances. Throughout her journey, Clarence faces numerous challenges, including language barriers, cultural differences, and difficulties accessing information about her family's past. However, she also meets people who help her along the way, including a local guide who becomes her friend and confidant. As Clarence becomes more immersed in the culture and history of Equatorial Guinea, she begins to question her own identity and her place in the world. She starts to see her life in Spain in a new light and realizes the connections between her family's past and her own experiences. As she continues to investigate her father's disappearance, Clarence uncovers some shocking secrets about her family's past and their involvement in the country's complex history. She also learns more about her uncle's motivations for asking her to visit Fernando Poo and the true reason behind his request. In the end, Clarence's journey takes her on a profound and life-changing journey as she uncovers the truth about her family's past and her own identity. She discovers the beauty and the complexity of a new culture, and she begins to see the world from a different perspective. The film Palm Trees in the Snow is a poignant and thought-provoking story about identity, family, and culture, set against the backdrop of a fascinating and often overlooked piece of history.
