Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin

Plot

Margot, a young and ambitious documentary filmmaker, has been searching for her roots and her long-lost mother for years. Her mother, Rachel, left their family when Margot was just a child, and Margot has always been curious about her heritage and the family she never got to meet. When she discovers that her mother's family still lives in a secluded Amish community, she quickly packs her bags and heads out to capture their story on film. Accompanied by her film crew, consisting of her producer, Ryan, and camera operator, Jocelyn, Margot arrives in the Amish community and meets a friendly-looking woman named Leah, an elderly member of the community and a distant relative of Rachel. Leah invites them to stay in the family's farmhouse, where they are welcomed with open arms by the community's patriarch, Isaac, his wife, Sarah, and their three children. Initially, Margot is fascinated by the Amish way of life, observing the family's traditional practices and customs. However, as time passes, she begins to notice strange occurrences around the farm. Doors and windows are found open, objects are moved around, and an unsettling feeling settles over the house, which her film crew can't explain. Leah seems particularly uneasy about the happenings, often disappearing for long periods or being overly secretive about the family's activities. When Margot confronts her about it, Leah reveals that there have been similar occurrences before, but they have never been able to explain them. It becomes clear that Leah is hiding something, but Margot can't quite put her finger on what. Meanwhile, Jocelyn starts to exhibit strange behavior, often becoming irritable and disconnected from the rest of the group. At first, Margot attributes her behavior to the isolated surroundings and the lack of sleep, but as time goes on, things escalate. Jocelyn starts to experience inexplicable visions, which seem to be drawing her towards an abandoned barn on the outskirts of the community. As the days go by, tensions rise, and the group starts to fracture. Margot's producer, Ryan, begins to suspect that something supernatural is afoot, but Margot remains skeptical, convinced that the cause of the strange occurrences must be human. She sets out to do some further research on the community and discovers a dark secret: a group of family members have a history of mental illness and violent tendencies. However, this revelation only adds to the mystery, as Margot can't shake the feeling that something more sinister is at play. It's then that she starts to notice strange symbols etched into the walls of the barn. Leah, who seemingly is aware of the markings, avoids the subject altogether. Jocelyn returns to the farmhouse, her behavior more erratic than ever. As night begins to fall, Margot tries to help her calm down, but it's too late. Jocelyn disappears into the night, determined to find an explanation for the visions. The next morning, Margot wakes up to an eerie silence. Ryan is frantically searching the house, and eventually, they find Jocelyn's camera near the abandoned barn. Reviewing the footage, they see Jocelyn entering the barn, but the camera suddenly drops, and the screen flickers. When the footage comes back, Jocelyn is no longer there. A chill runs down Margot's spine as she realizes that something has taken Jocelyn. Margot, realizing she may have underestimated the reality of the supernatural forces at play, decides to stay a little longer and figure out who or what has taken Jocelyn. Despite her better judgment, she's drawn to Leah, who seems to hold the key to the truth. In the tense moments that follow, the community begins to unravel its dark past. Leah confesses to a tragic family secret: several generations ago, the family was involved in a pact with a malevolent supernatural force, known as the 'Devil's Hand'. The community's ancestors believed that by appeasing this entity, they could ward off evil and maintain their community's prosperity. Over the years, however, as more and more family members succumbed to the pact, the entity's influence grew, turning some family members into violent, mentally unstable individuals. Leah admits that it's this entity that has been causing all the strange occurrences on the farm. She also reveals a more sinister truth: Isaac's young daughter, Abigail, has been possessed by the entity, which is why Margot's crew noticed her behavior was becoming increasingly erratic. As the night draws to a close, Margot discovers that she has a dark past tied to her mother's side of the family. Her ancestors were the originators of the pact with the malevolent entity and that's why she feels an inexplicable connection to the family. This revelation makes her wonder whether she's been chosen for this documentary for more sinister reasons. The ending is bleak. Margot is eventually trapped in the farmhouse with her producer and must face the evil that has infiltrated her family.
