Pretty Baby

Pretty Baby

Plot

Set against the backdrop of New Orleans in the early 20th century, Pretty Baby is a poignant and thought-provoking tale of a young girl's journey into womanhood, love, and the harsh realities of life. The film, directed by Louis Malle, is based on the semi-autobiographical novel of the same name by Tadzio Kohner, who was himself a child of a madam. The story centers around Violet, a 12-year-old girl who is the daughter of Hattie, a high-end prostitute working at the city's infamous Madame McElroy's brothel. Hattie's acquaintance with the photographer Bellocq marks the beginning of a significant turn in Violet's life. Bellocq, a man with a charming and gentle demeanor, is drawn to Violet's innocence and sweet nature. He eventually forms a deep bond with her, and as Violet becomes more self-aware and curious about the world, she finds herself gravitating towards Bellocq as a confidant. However, Violet's situation takes a drastic turn when she is forced into working at the brothel by her mother, who is more concerned with marrying a wealthy man than her daughter's well-being. With her newfound awareness of the world, Violet struggles with the realities of prostitution, and she begins to explore her own desires and needs. As she navigates this difficult landscape, she finds solace in her connection with Bellocq, who has become her one source of emotional support. As Bellocq and Violet's bond deepens, they both become increasingly drawn to each other, and their friendship blurs into a romance. Their relationship is passionate and innocent, yet it is undeniable that it holds a possessive quality that hints at something beyond friendship. Despite the societal norms that prohibit their love, the two share a profound connection that fosters emotional growth and self-discovery in Violet. However, the complexities of adulthood soon reassert themselves when Violet's mother returns to town. Hattie's reappearance brings with it the pressure to conform to societal expectations, and Violet is expected to take her place in the brothel alongside her mother. Bellocq's attempt to rescue Violet from her fate is complicated by their own desires, and ultimately, a choice has to be made between love and survival. The period setting of the film is captured in vivid detail, with production designer Mel Chen's meticulous attention to period-specific architecture and New Orleans' distinct cultural heritage creating an immersive atmosphere. The film's atmosphere is heightened by the use of Malle's camera, which delicately conveys the intensity and innocence of Violet's world. Malle's nuanced approach allows for a carefully balanced blend of comedy, pathos, and drama, never overwhelming the audience with explicit content, but rather guiding them through the complexities of Violet's experiences. The performances in the film are remarkable, with Susan Haskell performing childlike innocence to perfection as Violet. Brooke Shields, who plays Violet at different stages of her life, captures the essence of the character, bringing an undeniable vulnerability and charm to the role. Keith Carradine's portrayal of Bellocq adds depth and emotional authenticity to the narrative, humanizing a character who could have otherwise been a sexual predator. Pretty Baby addresses a wide range of themes, including the traumatic realities of prostitution, the complexities of first love, and the unbridgeable gap between innocence and adulthood. By sensitively exploring the emotional and psychological struggles faced by its protagonist, the film creates a cinematic experience that lingers long after the credits roll. The final shot, in which Violet is seen departing on a carousel, remains a poignant image, symbolizing the irreparable loss of her childhood innocence and the promise of an uncertain future.

A mature innocence – rare, fleeting, yet undeniably, it exists. Perhaps we catch a glimpse of it, a whisper of a trace, and the feeling is so sweet, so familiar, everything melts into unadulterated joy.

Don't Mess With Children. (This option is slightly less harsh)

Brooke Shields at 11 years old was indeed breathtakingly beautiful, like a blossoming peach tree. It's a pity that she became less attractive as she grew older. Her guest appearance in the second season of "Friends" revealed a large face that was hard to look at. So some actresses just don't age well; in fact, they become less attractive as they grow older.
