Project Silence

Project Silence

Plot

The eerie silence that once characterized the midnight sky above the Airport Bridge is suddenly shattered by the ominous rumble of thunder. The sky has turned a foreboding shade of dark grey, with thick clouds swirling across the horizon like a maelstrom. At first, the drivers and passengers on the bridge seem oblivious to the impending doom that awaits them. But as visibility begins to dwindle, alarm starts to spread. Cars begin to slow down, their headlights casting only faint beams through the torrential downpour. People scramble to find their seats, confused and frightened by the rapid deterioration of conditions. But it's too late, the situation has reached a breaking point. Sudden explosions rock the bridge, sending cars crashing into one another and causing massive chain collisions. The chaos is so intense that people are forced to flee from their vehicles, abandoning them to the mercy of the tempest. In the midst of this catastrophic chaos, something far more sinister begins to unfold. The canine subjects known as "Echo," part of a top-secret military experiment known as "Project Silence," find themselves free from their restraints. This sudden liberation marks the beginning of a reign of terror, as Echo unleashes its fearlessness and ferocity upon the traumatised survivors. Armed with an uncanny intuition, Echo exploits the chaos to the full, leaving the increasingly fragmented human group on the bridge no other choice than to flee from their new fearsome adversaries. These once-innocent canines, with a genetic makeup engineered to make them quieter and stronger than regular dogs, are primed for the ultimate test through Project Silence. However, in their quest for raw, uncontrollable power, it seems these commando-trained soldiers of the four-legged kind became trapped in the abyss of their own subjugation, leaving the now-harried survivors caught between an apocalyptic natural threat and a maelstrom of aggressive, armed, skilled behemoths right inside their midst. In a desperate bid for survival, scattered individuals from the bridge resort to extreme measures in their quest to outsmart and outmaneuver the terrifying canine enforcers of Project Silence. Alarms are soon ringing out with a dreadful logic as people rapidly lose all reason amidst an unmitigated onslaught from the aggressive and sublimely battle-hardened animals - people who a few hours prior were having a bad ordinary night with nothing save but dull mundane reality to confront are now at the receiving end of a merciless fight for existence with a creature engineered for battle. To identify the full extent and the implications of Project Silence becomes increasingly harder, even for the most level-headed among them. Their very survival now hangs by a thread, constantly placed at peril by an endless series of their efforts. Rounding up the survivors in the middle of that unrelenting dread leaves no clear alternative to facing their dreadful fates together. They are forced into a grim alliance without being able to formulate any clear resistance plan. The only truth about the night - all hope appears lost. Still, nobody has given up as yet - they knew Project Silence far more intimately. What remains clear now is this fierce despair bred resilient spirits. There's also the feeling of fury and futility fueling them to rise up and strike against an opponent that was after all bred in the same streets as them. The soundless fury, originating from relentless attackers, still echoes through abandoned bridges today.

Many said the production aimed high, targeting the success of "Train to Busan," with a budget twice its size! It premiered in the non-competitive section at Cannes last year, resulting in a lukewarm reception. Today, I finally got to see it. I can only say it's utterly mediocre. You can sense the ambition to rival "Train to Busan," but it doesn't even reach the viewing experience of "Train to Busan 2." The sense of mystery vanishes within the first ten minutes, and the use of dogs as the antagonists feels utterly uninspired... Then it attempts atmosphere, ensemble cast dynamics, a father-daughter storyline, humorous moments, suspense, political intrigue, and more. It feels like the creators considered every element, but the execution is too conventional, let alone thinking about commercial appeal...

It's such a shame about Lee Sun-kyun... Forever remembered.

The rescue is too foolish, the disaster is handled perfunctorily, and it blatantly treats the audience as mentally challenged.

The high-octane live-streaming stuntman unleashes a biochemical crisis and the revenge of the Spec-Ops dogs. The pacing, details, and emotional descriptions in the later half create a noticeable disconnect, weakening the intended tension, excitement, and cohesiveness. Human emotions are incredibly complex, but the dogs are pure, embodying the true meaning of "ride or die." The forced human-dog comparison feels contrived and rigid. And it dares to compare itself to <Train to Busan>? Seriously?

Lee Sun-kyun's posthumous performance as a lone hero is deeply moving. However, using rabid dogs as the central creatures for a special effects-driven thriller feels somewhat distasteful. Perhaps a more inherently malevolent monster could have been a better choice.
