Plot

In the midst of a chaotic and competitive environment of Hollywood, struggling actresses Marnie (played by Jenny Slate) and her friend, Sarah (played by Hannah Gadsby), find themselves at a crossroads in their careers. Constantly bombarded with rejection and dwindling confidence, they resort to desperate measures to cope with the harsh realities of their lives as aspiring thespians. One evening, as they're walking home from yet another grueling audition, they stumble upon their new neighbor, an enigmatic figure known only as Mr. Banks (played by Will Forte). His peculiar demeanor and an air of mystery surrounding him capture their attention, and an idea begins to take shape in their minds. Marnie and Sarah, both yearning for fame and recognition, become fixated on their new neighbor, convinced that he must be a powerful talent agent, capable of transforming their careers for the better. As they become more and more infatuated with the notion, their fantasies start to get the better of them. One night, under the cover of darkness, they hatch a reckless plan to take Mr. Banks hostage, convinced that this drastic measure is the key to unlocking their stardom. Under duress, Mr. Banks is forced to play along with their demands, presenting himself as the ruthless agent he supposedly is. As the unlikely trio embarks on a twisted game of cat and mouse, their fantasy world begins to blur the lines between reality and fiction. Marnie and Sarah become convinced that they're in a position of power, capable of manipulating the situation to their advantage. As the situation spirals out of control, they start to lose sight of the real world, becoming increasingly detached from their lives and the consequences of their actions. Their fantasy world, filled with promise and expectation, provides them with a much-needed escape from the harsh realities of their existence. In this alternate reality, Marnie and Sarah imagine Mr. Banks as a ruthless, cunning talent agent, who will do whatever it takes to catapult them to stardom. However, the lines between their fantasy and reality continue to blur, causing friction and tension within their little trio. As the days pass, the stakes become higher, and the situation escalates, threatening to destroy the very fabric of their lives. Despite the danger they've put themselves in, Marnie and Sarah find themselves clinging to their fantasy world, unwilling to let go of the dream that Mr. Banks represents – a dream that has given them a sense of purpose and a glimmer of hope. Throughout their ordeal, they continue to hone their acting skills, rehearsing scenes and scenarios in preparation for their big break. Their practice sessions become an integral part of their fantasy world, as they imagine themselves as stars, performing for sold-out crowds and basking in the adoration of adoring fans. However, as their fantasies become more outlandish and detached from reality, the boundaries between their make-believe world and the real one continue to blur. Marnie and Sarah's perceptions of reality become distorted, making it increasingly difficult for them to discern what's real and what's just a product of their vivid imagination. As the situation teeters on the edge of chaos, it becomes clear that Marnie and Sarah's grasp on reality is tenuous at best. They're trapped in a world of their own creation, one that's both fantastical and terrifying. Their desperation to achieve stardom has clouded their judgment, pushing them down a path of self-destruction. As the story hurtles towards its climax, Marnie and Sarah are forced to confront the harsh realities of their situation. They're forced to face the fact that their fantasy world was just that – a fantasy – and that it's time to take responsibility for their actions. In the end, the fantasy world, which had provided them with a temporary escape, crumbles around them. Marnie and Sarah are left facing the consequences of their actions, with the harsh reality of their existence staring them straight in the face. It's a sobering conclusion to a story that began with a glimmer of hope and promise, only to descend into chaos and despair. The film ends on a note of bleakness and disillusionment, a stark reminder of the high stakes and the crushing disappointment that accompany the pursuit of stardom. Marnie and Sarah's story serves as a cautionary tale, a reminder that the fantasy world of show business can be a cruel mistress, always ready to snuff out the dreams of those who dare to chase their aspirations.
