Ricky Stanicky

Plot
Ricky Stanicky is a comedy about three childhood best friends who have been lying to their loved ones for decades, often calling upon the existence of an imaginary character to justify their outrageous behavior. Luke, a suburban father struggling to connect with his kids, Mike, a self-absorbed, recently fired advertising executive, and Dave, a semi-retired man still trying to be the life of the party, all have one thing in common: they're part of a long-standing lie that involves their fabled friend, Ricky Stanicky. The legend of Ricky Stanicky began 20 years ago when the three friends were college kids. In an attempt to get out of a campus security officer's hot-boxing check while the cops investigated, they created an eccentric, foul-mouthed, and debauched alter ego. This fictional character quickly evolved into their primary saving grace whenever they found themselves in precarious, frequently stupid, situations. By conjuring Ricky, they could justify their outrageous antics to their parents, partners, and eventually their spouses. However, their ability to consistently invoke the protective presence of Ricky grows increasingly strained as they reach adulthood and are scrutinized more thoroughly by their loved ones. As the friends finally start admitting the dishonesty to each other, the demand for honesty from their wives and significant others intensifies, bringing their reliance on Ricky to breaking point. Luke's young daughter asks if Ricky ever visited when she was little; Mike's date for a networking event slips up and expresses some outright disgust about how they don't "get along" with "their buddies anymore"; and Dave starts showing legitimate proof of being with them when 'Ricky' intervened to help them avoid jail, with an eyewitness confirming Dave really was behaving uncontrollably. Upon meeting to reassure one another it is their own deep-down intentions to break the life of lies that started to stringle down their lives. When they initially fail to prepare for it but get lucky when a struggling local actor accidentally saw an advertisement they placed: so for the sake of their own self-destruction, an actor named Derek Bledsoe (played by actor Trent Ford in Ricky Stanicky) was called upon for reenacting, with full authenticity, Ricky Stanicky for an evening; this was really more for their guilt and their own personal reflection. For years, they did and may do more acts hurt not only one another, but also others with negative behavior. At first hesitant, their actors and plan for these particular evening turn into their evening that seems like "Movie Night." With Derek attempting to capitalize full presence of Mr. Stanicky across evening to maintain perfect impersonation from true identity. When further complicated when more unexpected parties observe the entire experiment in progress including home security to even some suspicious guests at Mike's place.

While the ending veers into overly preachy American sentimentality... it's actually pretty good.

April 3, 2013. On the outskirts of Beijing alongside the little train. The night before the Qingming holiday, Maogong was working overtime, and I was studying while waiting for him to come home. Watching BTV Film, I felt so happy watching brainless films. I guess I'm losing my ambition. Now, this film *Ricky Stanicky* is just the kind of movie I enjoy - perfect for switching off and having a laugh. Definitely not one to overthink!

After watching this, I surprisingly have the urge to raise kids. Talk about being zombified!

Back in its day, this definitely would've been a "cool" movie! It starts off with a gay couple kissing, a dad letting his kid pee anywhere, and all sorts of "bad examples." It ends on a heartwarming note, making it a pretty good watch. The soundtrack is definitely a plus.

The predictable plot resorts to the tired courtroom trope in the end.
