Salawahan

Plot
"SALAWAHAN" is a 2023 Filipino drama film directed by Jeffrey Hidalgo and produced by Vivamax. The movie stars Angeli Khang, known for her captivating on-screen presence and undeniable charm, as the lead character Melaine. In this provocative film, Melaine finds herself entangled in a complicated love triangle with not one, but two charismatic men - embodied by the talented actors Albie Casino and Van Allen Ong. Melaine's life seems to have it all; she's beautiful, loved, and full of life. The camera pans across her stunning features showcasing her well-manicured nails, perfectly coiffed hair, and captivating smile. However, beneath her polished exterior, Melaine is far from content. Her relationship with the first man is routine and predictable, characterized by familiarity and even boredom. At the same time, her connection with the second man is strained due to unresolved issues and festering emotions. This strained relationship is in need of resolution, in spite of the deep passion that lies beneath. Albie Casino brings to life the character Michael, Melaine's on-again, off-again boyfriend who's seen as her stable influence. Despite Michael's initial hesitation and insecurity, he quickly moves past those emotions, taking charge in the relationship to try and rid his loved one of any doubts in their love. Nonetheless, those cracks beneath the surface of their otherwise conventional romance hint at the complexities that neither of them dares to confront. It remains evident that beneath the once unbreakable love lies uncertainty. Things take an intriguing turn when Melaine meets Alex, a well-to-do, free-spirited man portrayed by Van Allen Ong. Their whirlwind encounter leaves her bewildered and simultaneously, leaves a lasting impression on her heart. Alex's unconventional approach to love pushes Melaine out of her comfort zone, hinting that even she is capable of being something or someone else entirely. The sparks that ignite between them establish a palpable attraction. This feeling is augmented by her long-standing, though complicated connection to Michael. Here, lies the crux of the movie - the genuine chemistry she shares with not one, but two men; a reality that she is unwilling and unable to see past. As Melaine embarks on a deeply charged, thrilling relationship with Alex, her relationship with Michael reaches its boiling point. The two men are an antithesis to one another, despite the initial camaraderie they share; they diverge along fundamental fronts - their values and worldviews. The duality brought to Melaine's blossoming romance effectively propels her to explore feelings she's carefully side-stepped until now. Melaine discovers herself struggling to be true to her true nature within her tryst with Alex - where raw emotions, passion and sensual want rise to the surface. What's being nurtured in this fervent connection she discovers threatens to leave the comforting familiarity of a world that no longer satisfies her. Angeli Khang has been transformed into someone that knows the need for exploration, bringing genuine tension to her acting performances. Instead of turning the issue of her involvement with two opposing men inward; Melaine begins to explore what reality even means in the lives of these two individuals that at the very least, both elicit passionate response from inside her. Through Melaine's choices, the movie mirrors our real world situation where relationship truths aren't something being easily grasped by the minds. Scenes of Angeli Khang, Albie Casino, and Van Allen Ong in engaging configurations portray emotion in delicate sequences that at once paint the overall feelings brought by her self-admissions about her involvement in relationship conundrums. However, as the numerous twists and turns unfold, Melaine is at last met by another of a sensual type; played by Itan Rosales. His presence symbolizes the open wilder possibilities she has unconsciously yearned for and now seems enticed toward it entirely. The tumultuous upheavals of her affairs lay out on display how she discovers being self aware of her emotions but ultimately cannot avoid getting seduced by raw sensuality. It is in this chaotic tempest that we realize that even love as this tumultuous affair hangs precariously on thread of compromise. While her existence may have meant unceasing turmoil and conflicting expectations to those around her, we assume it also for the time being be the reason she has been enticed by what comes to her on the basis of chance rather than its apparent reliability. At the end of the film Melaine remains enticed with her relationship - not having yet arrived at any meaningful decision with respect to her participation in two worlds within the limits of a brief.

A scenic Indonesian road-trip family drama that definitely sparks wanderlust. The BGM and cinematography are indeed outstanding. It was screened at the 2017 China-ASEAN Expo Indonesian Film Showcase, held at the Nanning New National Cinema.
