Savior

Plot
The film "Savior" is a poignant and powerful drama that delves into the complexities of war and humanity. Directed by Po-Chih Leong, this 1998 thriller is based on true events, shedding light on the atrocities committed during the Bosnian War. The story centers around Tom Stevens (played by Dennis Quaid), a seasoned and cynical mercenary in the French Foreign Legion who finds himself in the midst of a brutal conflict. Upon arrival, Tom is joined by a group of seasoned soldiers, including the charming but troubled Dan (played by N'Dea Dambrot). Initially, Tom is disheartened by the news of a lost loved one and is dismissive of the consequences of war. The atrocities committed around him continue to weigh heavily on his conscience, but the ferocity and brutality of it all leave him questioning his own values. The Bosnian conflict is filled with moments of brutality, acts that stain the very fabric of human existence, pushing even the most hardened of soldiers like Tom to reevaluate his purpose in the midst of war. Despite his cynicism and growing sense of disillusionment, Tom begins to sense the vast cruelty around him and what it does to humanity's resilience. This raises a poignant question: how do individuals with previously intact moral selves maintain their optimism when surrounded by gruesome scenes of suffering and the complete collapse of civilization? As the story unravels, we get a glimpse of Tom's complex and emotionally damaged character. His narrative is portrayed as one of disillusionment, questioning the motivations and actions of those around him. Throughout the conflict, the backdrop is plagued by ever-mounting chaos and destruction, and even among soldiers, there are multiple emotions expressed by characters around him. Despite the gruesome scenes unfolding around him, Tom is met with new hope when he is unexpectedly introduced to Sarah (played by Elina Löwensohn), a young girl whose sister was taken then tortured by rival military forces. This unlikely encounter marks the beginning of Tom's transformative journey towards rediscovering his own moral compass. Sarah becomes the trigger that sets in motion Tom's eventual empathetic awakening. Watching her extraordinary courage amidst horror in the war-torn region underscores a transformative change in Tom. At this point, his persona, forged from the numerous actions he'd performed as a mercenary, is starkly contrasted to the moral ambiguity of war and of individuals facing grueling pain at the hands of seemingly remorseless forces. This movie mirrors real-life stories from the Yugoslav Civil War, the extent of cruelty inflicted to an undeniable point, raising critical questions over what it ultimately means to be human, even when it's utterly immersed in an environment that often defies all compassionate virtues on display. By stepping into this emotionally raw and violent environment, viewers are, like Tom, confronted with scenarios that both torment and educate them.

A gripping survival story set in the vastness of space. Matt Damon must have used a body double; there's no way he could have gotten that skinny. Also, how desperate is the US to tap into the Chinese market? The moment I saw the CNSA (China National Space Administration), I burst out laughing.

Absolutely loved it! Finding a sci-fi film these days that avoids melodrama and excessive sentimentality is a rare treat. When it comes to sci-fi atmosphere, Ridley Scott is far superior to Nolan. Beneath the comedic surface lies a remarkably orthodox approach to hard sci-fi, and the complete absence of distracting romantic subplots is just fantastic. What I appreciated most was the film's lack of focus on Earthly nostalgia during the survival process. The climax isn't even about returning to Earth, because ultimately, that's not what matters!
