Scary Movie 5

Plot

Scary Movie 5 is the fifth installment in the popular Scary Movie franchise, a series of satirical horror-comedy films that lampoon popular horror movies. In this particular film, the movie pays homage to a multitude of different classics, not limited to a few notable ones, such as ParaNorman, Get Out, and Child's Play. The movie begins with an introduction to Jody Sanders (played by Ashley Tisdale), a lovable but slightly eccentric mother, who's getting ready to start a new life with her husband Dan (played by Simon Rex) and her children. Dan, on the other hand, is shown to be quite the contrast to his eccentric wife; he's depicted as relatively grounded and practical. As they all move into their dream home, little do they know that their tranquility is short-lived. Upon moving into the house, they start experiencing supernatural occurrences that hint at a malevolent force within the house. The family is initially under the assumption that the strange events are due to a simple prank from a group of rowdy kids next door, or just part of the old house's settling issues. Dan, however, is a bit more skeptical of the situation, initially attributing it to Jody being overly sensitive to the slightest movements caused by the house's old foundation. Noticing the rising tension in the household, they start installing security cameras to keep an eye on things, to ward off what they initially attribute to an ordinary household disturbance. However, upon reviewing the footage, Jody becomes convinced that a malevolent entity is genuinely haunting their house. Convinced that it's an entity from a horror classic known as Child's Play, Jody is left to try and find out how it's possible that a doll like Chucky; a popular infamous, malevolent spirit, can seemingly come to life and be stalking them. Without any evidence, or at the very least, at the realization that they really do think Chucky has infested their house, Dan's skepticism towards all the events spirals further and further into chaos. Under immense pressure and also overwhelmed by the series of supernatural encounters, the tensions at home intensify as Dan starts to question not just the feasibility of a haunted house, but his wife's genuine concern for keeping the family safe. The debate on what is truly going on escalates to the point where they seek the assistance of their neighbor, Rodkin (played by Jordana Brewster) - an expert or possibly just an artist. Rodkin is portrayed to act on an educated assumption that an actual haunted house exists in their location, based on the numerous different pieces of tragic and bizarre events of supernatural origins from the respective town's history that Rodkin possesses. Compounded with a long term obsessive interest into all that pertains to, beyond supernatural beings, their expertise allows for quick access to an understanding of said malevolent spirit's background. Rodkin attempts to help Dan and Jody understand the behavior and purpose of Chucky, in some capacity. However, Rodkin immediately sets up a chilling expectation for the climax by dropping sudden comments that at this point only seem abrupt. As Dan continues to appear unconvinced by Rodkin's untrained narrative pertaining to the exorcism of a possessed plaything; his stubbornness allows an increasing trajectory of the malevolent being we must confront that steadily intensifies into the household.

The opening Charlie Sheen bedroom scene is definitely a highlight! Still full of vigor, it spoofs a bunch of movies, which is great.

By the fifth installment, the number of movies being parodied is dwindling, but the plot flows together reasonably well. That being said, the nonsensical humor rarely elicits genuine belly laughs anymore.

For a spoof movie, this is actually pretty amusing.

Used to find some of that American lowbrow humor mildly amusing, like that novel feeling of accidentally taking a bite of poop. But after seeing it too many times, that poop is just poop. And the audience isn't a dog.
