Sea Fever

Plot
"Sea Fever" is a 2019 psychological horror-thriller film directed by Neasa Hardiman. The movie is set on a small West of Ireland fishing trawler, the 'Nyx', where a crew of men face an eerie and terrifying survival challenge. The film stars Hermione Corfield as Siobhan, the lone female crew member on board, and a predominantly male cast, including Connolly, Jack Hickey, and Olwen Fouéré. The movie begins with Siobhan, a young engineer, joining the 'Nyx' and its crew for their next fishing trip. At night, after the crew begins their journey, they set off into the calm, open waters of the Atlantic. The atmosphere is tense, and Siobhan struggles to fit in with the all-male crew that seem to have grown weary of her presence. One day, while they're fishing, the crew hauls in an unusual, infected catch. As they begin to store their catch in the ship's holds, the crew starts to experience strange occurrences, which they initially dismiss as mere paranoia. They also start to fall ill, succumbing to mysterious and rapidly progressive diseases. It becomes clear that the infected catch has somehow contaminated their water supply, putting the entire crew in dire peril. Desperate to uncover the source of the contamination, Siobhan and the crew's leader, Martin, embark on a perilous journey to investigate. Along the way, they encounter increasingly gruesome and unsettling discoveries that threaten their grip on reality. As the crew's grip on sanity begins to slip, they're beset by hallucinations, paranoia, and violent outbursts. They also become increasingly convinced that something sinister, almost supernatural, is happening on board. Tensions between the crew members escalate, and their fear for their lives turns into desperation. Throughout the film, Hardiman masterfully ratchets up the tension, crafting a claustrophobic atmosphere of dread. Siobhan finds herself increasingly isolated and at the mercy of the increasingly unhinged crew. The once peaceful vessel now seems like a nightmarish setting, with her own survival hanging precariously in the balance. Siobhan's growing isolation serves as a metaphor for her alienation from her male co-workers and society at large. This mirrors a larger theme in the film, which touches upon how a group of strangers, bound together only by their shared circumstances, can swiftly succumb to chaos and anarchy. While the supernatural aspects of the plot contribute to the film's sense of mystery, they add to the tension but don't overshadow the central human drama unfolding on board the trawler. The crew's disintegration and descent into madness serves as a poignant commentary on how quickly social norms can break down when people are thrown together in an extreme environment with little support. Ultimately, "Sea Fever" turns the traditional 'survival horror' genre inside out, replacing it with a gripping character study and social critique. It shows how the fear of the unknown, a group of isolated individuals, and an unexplained threat can lead to a tragic and harrowing sequence of events.
