Secret in Their Eyes

Plot
In 1997, FBI trainees Jess Cobb (Chastain), Claire Benoit (Giamatti), and Martin Morales (Rivera) form an unbreakable bond as part of the team led by the District Attorney Ray Kasten (Norton). The four work together to solve the murder of a 13-year-old girl, the tragic loss of Jessie, and the brutal rape and murder of the girl. The crime leaves an indelible mark on the investigators. Over the years, as the FBI team disbanded and Ray Kasten (Norton) went on to become a district attorney in Chicago the bond between Jess, Martin, and Claire remains strong, they regularly meet over dinner and continue to discuss their time as FBI partners. As the years go by, life progresses and the investigators move on with their respective lives. Ray Kasten has married, and he has two children with his wife Kate. Despite the success he has had in both his career and personal life, the tragic loss of his daughter Jessie still haunts him. Jess and Martin, on the other hand, continue to serve the FBI but are not partners. Jess is now working as part of the elite Behavioral Analysis Unit with the FBI's headquarters in Quantico while Martin has moved into the FBI's New York division. Meanwhile, another case unfolds in 2015, when Martin sees a news report about a girl being brutally murdered. As he watches the images of the crime scene, the faces, the clothes and the details, something hits a chord. He immediately contacts Jess and Claire to bring to their attention the similarities of the crime to that of Jessie's murder. They quickly realize that the person who committed the original murder, and the person who has committed this new crime, are one and the same. The trio is reunited and decides to reopen the 13-year-old case after realizing they have been dealing with the same perpetrator all along. As a result, Ray, who is still struggling to come to terms with the loss of his daughter, joins forces with the trio once more to solve the case. As the investigation unfolds, it becomes clear that the perpetrator has been a ghost in the system, always hiding in plain sight. The trio is tasked with piecing together the events from the 90s to unravel the truth behind the murder of Jessie, and that of the 13-year-old girl whose identity hasn't been revealed. As they progress on the case, they meet some challenges such as having to work with a different generation of officers, a team of investigators that are not as familiar and as skilled as they were when they closed out the first case of Jessie. They have to be extremely cautious as they get closer to solving the case, and to exposing the perpetrator who has been able to remain at large all these years. With time they finally have enough evidence, and with support of their colleagues and the new DA, they make the arrest of the perpetrator. However, upon arresting the murderer, they come to realize that the killer isn't who they thought it was. The truth about the original case is revealed to them and they are left feeling guilty for the years of pain and suffering they caused for the family of the girl they wrongly arrested. They then have to make amends and find justice not only for the family but also for themselves. The investigation leads to a thrilling conclusion as the trio closes the 20-year-old case, finally bringing justice to the victims and their families.
