Shakma

Plot

The 1990 film Shakma is a horror movie directed by Robert Twomey. The film takes place in a remote research facility where scientists are conducting various experiments, possibly even experimenting with primates as test subjects. It is here that a baboon named Shakma, who was initially involved in these sinister experiments, manages to escape from his cage and break free from his restraints. As Shakma makes his way around the laboratory, he becomes increasingly aggressive, driven by a primal rage that stems from the traumatic experience he endured during his time under the researchers' care. Shakma is a baboon unlike any other, exhibiting an unusual level of ferocity and intelligence. His aggressive behavior quickly escalates into a spree of violence as he attacks a group of college students who had entered the facility while it was still operational. The college students are a diverse group of young people who had been invited to the research facility by one of the scientists, Dr. Paul Talbot, in an effort to conduct further research on their cognitive abilities. The group consists of Mark, an eager and ambitious young man; Jenny, the group's most outspoken and confident member; Tony, the de facto group leader who is quick-witted but also rather reckless; Sue, the quiet and reserved bookworm of the group; and finally, Dr. Emily Hall, a brilliant scientist who is secretly researching a mysterious figure known as Shakma. Upon entering the facility, the group discovers that the research building appears abandoned and eerily quiet. Mark, feeling the need to explore, decides to venture further into the facility, while the others remain in the entry room, eager to get started with their research. Unbeknownst to them, Mark inadvertently frees Shakma from his cage. As Shakma begins to terrorize the group, it becomes increasingly clear that their lives are on the line. The group fights back in desperation, but Shakma is a formidable foe. His intelligence is uncanny, as he appears to understand the layout of the facility and uses this knowledge to his advantage. In a pivotal scene, the group discovers Shakma's background, which is tied to Dr. Talbot's sinister experiments. It's revealed that Shakma was subjected to experiments that would alter his brain chemistry and enhance his cognitive abilities, but the experiments also inadvertently unleashed a deep-seated rage within him. Throughout the film, Shakma continues to wreak havoc on the group, and the remaining survivors begin to form uneasy alliances and desperate ploys in an effort to outsmart the vengeful baboon. Tony and Sue team up to search for a way to subdue Shakma, while Dr. Emily Hall grapples with the ethics of her research and the potential consequences of playing with nature. Ultimately, it falls to Mark to make a final stand against Shakma, with devastating consequences for all parties involved. As the bodies pile up, it becomes clear that Shakma's rampage is not just a simple case of animal aggression. Instead, it represents a more complex and disturbing commentary on the blurring of lines between human and animal, and the devastating consequences that can result from playing God. The film culminates in a bloody confrontation between Mark, Tony, and Shakma, as they fight for their lives against the increasingly enraged baboon. In the end, only one person manages to evade Shakma's wrath, while the others meet a tragic end. Through its exploration of themes such as ethics, morality, and the blurred lines between human and animal, Shakma delivers a visceral and unsettling viewing experience that is as gruesome as it is thought-provoking.
