Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

Plot

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is a pivotal installment in the Spider-Man franchise, traversing new and uncharted territories in the Multiverse. The movie picks up where the previous installment left off, with Miles Morales, aka Spider-Man, reuniting with his love interest, Gwen Stacy. Miles is still grappling with his responsibilities as a superhero, balancing his life as a young high school student with his duties as a crime-fighter. However, fate has other plans, and Miles is catapulted across the Multiverse, a vast expanse of parallel universes where various iterations of Spider-Man coexist. Upon arrival, Miles meets the Spider Society, an elite team of Spider-People entrusted with safeguarding the Multiverse against threats that could destabilize its delicate balance. Miles' initial encounter with the Spider Society is nothing short of overwhelming. He is immersed in a universe teeming with an array of Spider-People, each with their unique abilities, skills, and personalities. Miles is amazed by the sheer diversity of Spider-Verse, meeting octopus-like Spider-Verse member, Spider-Woman, as well as wispy, shapeshifting Spider-Person, Spider-UK. The Spider Society is led by Peni Parker, the spirited and determined Spider-Girl. Miles is soon introduced to the Council, a high echelon of Spider-People governing the Society's actions. However, the very moment Miles attempts to forge alliances and unite with the Spider Society, he becomes the focal point of a catastrophic disagreement. The Council's conservative stance on addressing a new threat sparks a fundamental rift between Miles and the Society, positioning him against his peers. The great divide arises from the Spider-Society dealing with a developing threat known as the 'Buble.' The Bubble is a perpetual entity enveloping vast swaths of the Multiverse. Peni and the Spider-Society plan to squash the Bubble. Miles can't agree on the plan since that will cause massive loss, putting an entire side of the Multisphere in immense danger as Bubble keeps absorbing the space until there's no dimension left. When they end up disagreeing on a plan, Miles storms out of the discussion, marking the beginning of an eventful journey. Miles resolves to take matters into his own hands, navigating through treacherous challenges and questioning the integrity of the Spider-Society. Along the way, he discovers that the stakes are even more daunting than he initially thought. Miles eventually deduces that preserving continuity could be the least risky solution to save not just his multiverse but the one he holds dear. Through his perilous journey, Miles evokes unbreakable strength, character, and a heightened resolve. He skillfully navigates through cryptic realms and unknown universes, enduring grueling setbacks, tragic losses, and formidable tests of fortitude. Gaining precious allies along the way, Miles adopts a measured and wise approach while showcasing resourcefulness and tenacity, transcending vast chasms into regions with untold risks. The climactic final act unfolds with Miles confronting his individual Spider-Power, which unfolds through vivid glimpses into poignant vignettes with characters of his past. As Miles transforms through tears and struggle he realizes things that had initially felt wrong appear more sound as Miles realises his goal for preserving the very essence that he's nurtured for years - love. Throughout the epic journey, Miles undergoes a complex transformation. He experiences existential struggles, interstellar battles, shocking revelations, selfless courage and transcends into an identity intertwined with an unwavering passion and strong sense of purpose as a Spider-Man that transcends definitions. Ultimately, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is a stirring exploration of perception and transformation, probing profound aspects of identity, belonging, trust, love, and resolve. The cinematic output blends exuberant imagination and cinematic complexity with humor, striking emotional intimacy and introspection to deliver an honest reflection on the unceasing value of genuine human connections within boundless dimensions of possibility.

Okay, here's an English translation that captures the spirit of the original Chinese review: "The visuals are absolutely mind-blowing! But waiting through the credits for a post-credit scene, only to get Lu Han singing... that's just painfully awkward."

Okay, here's an English translation that captures the raw, envious reaction: "My first reaction after seeing it was pure jealousy. Damn, they made something so freaking incredible. Holy shit." 或者 "Damn, they nailed it so hard. Holy crap."

The funniest part was everyone waiting ages for a post-credits scene, only to be greeted by a Lu Han song, and then collectively leaving the theater...

Another visually overwhelming film. The technical achievement is still impressive, but the script is deeply disappointing. Overall, I'd give it a 7. The dazzling visuals can't hide the uneven pacing and the cliched message. The way they explore the protagonists' "father issues" feels disjointed. On one hand, the visual presentation is ingenious, like the abstract style and color scheme of Gwen's bedroom; on the other hand, the dialogue and plot are so dull that you can predict every line, often resorting to simplistic emotional appeals, and the action scenes lack imagination and feel formulaic. Spider headquarters, Indian Spider-Man, Spider-Punk, Renaissance...
