Plot

Swan Lake, a timeless masterpiece, begins in the enchanting atmosphere of a serene lake, its tranquil surface reflecting the beauty of nature. As the curtain rises, a delicate water nymph, clad in a flowing white tutu, sets the tone for the enchanting tale of love, loyalty, and the eternal struggle between good and evil. As the story unfolds, we are introduced to the heartbroken and forlorn Odette, a majestic swan with a poignant past. Once, she was a ravishing princess, beloved by all, with a radiant spirit and a captivating smile. But fate, it seems, had other plans. Tricked by the cunning sorcerer, von Rothbart, Odette is cursed to remain in the form of a swan for eternity. Only during the twilight hours, when the veil of night descends, is she granted the privilege of transforming back into her human form. Thus begins Odette's odyssey, a relentless quest for love, redemption, and ultimate freedom. As the seasons pass, she befriends a group of sympathetic swans, their songs a poignant reminder of her tragic fate. Among them is Odile, a dark and mysterious seductress, who, disguised as Odette, casts a spell of deceit and deception, ultimately threatening the fragile bond between Odette and the handsome Prince Siegfried. As fate would have it, Prince Siegfried, a valiant and chivalrous knight, is scheduled to participate in a grand ball, where he will select his bride. The prince, enchanted by his mother's tales of virtuous women, sets out to find a true love, one who embodies the qualities of strength, kindness, and beauty. Little does he know that his life is about to take a dramatic turn. As the grand ball takes place, Odette, still in her swan form, observes the festivities with a mix of longing and despair. It is then that she sees Prince Siegfried, his gleaming smile and broad shoulders rendering him irresistible. Moved by her mysterious beauty and resolute spirit, Prince Siegfried falls deeply in love with Odette. In a flash of hope, Odette, believing that she has found her savior, gradually reveals herself to Siegfried. As the moon sets over the lake, they form a strong bond, their love for each other rivaled only by the sorcerer's disdain. Von Rothbart, Odette's arch-nemesis, masterminds an intricate web of deceit, hell-bent on breaking the spell that can set Odette free. In a memorable twist, he disguises his daughter, Odile, as Odette, playing on Siegfried's naivety and good intentions. Unbeknownst to the desperate prince, Odile, masquerading as the genuine Odette, seduces Siegfried with her siren-like beauty and cunning wit. The spell is too powerful to resist. As the inevitable love scene unfolds, Odile's mesmerizing charm and alluring presence overpower Siegfried, who, blinded by love, hesitantly vows eternal fidelity to the false Odette. The devastating news reaches Odette, whose heart sinks to its breaking point. She realizes that her eternal love, Prince Siegfried, is none other than a willing participant in the sorcerer's devious plan. As the darkness deepens, and the lake's tranquility is disrupted by the turmoil brewing within Odette's soul, she decides to confront the treacherous forces scheming against her. In a state of desperate sorrow, she reveals her true identity to Siegfried and regains her human form. Though still in love, the news of his duplicity leaves Odette heartbroken, her future now unsure. The final act marks a poignant confrontation between love and betrayal, a cataclysmic clash of unyielding hope and darkness. In her unshakeable commitment to justice, Odette determines the outcome of the battle between fate and the forces of evil. The stage is set for a climactic duel between Ottilie's beauty, Prince Siegfried's charm and ultimately his mistake. In the grand finale, Prince Siegfried, realizing his grave mistake, pays a tragic price for his betrayal. Ultimately, Odette's true love manages to set aside his selfish desires and decides to marry her, securing her release from the sorcerer's curse. As the young couple exchanges their vows, von Rothbart's web of deceit is destroyed, and the curse is lifted. The enchanting lake reverts to its tranquil state, Odette, now free from her ordeal, rejoins Prince Siegfried, their love untainted by the arts of deception.

A rather mediocre Japanese animation. I always felt something was off about it as a child, and now I realize it's the disconnect between the music and the visual pacing, especially when compared to "Fantasia." The owl spirit patiently waiting three years for the princess to willingly marry him is remarkably noble. A stupid and evil human, given any power, would have resorted to force.

The dubbed version by Shanghai Film Dubbing Studio is absolutely amazing! Tong Zirong has always been the only voice of Prince Charming in my heart.

Thought I was getting the 1979 Russian Swan Lake and it turned out to be the Japanese animated version! I remember watching this as a kid, so nostalgic!
