Plot

Sweet & Sour is a 2013 Filipino romantic comedy-drama film directed by Jade Castro, written by Dolly Anne Carvajal, and starring Enchong Dee and Erich Gonzales. The movie tells the story of Mark (played by Enchong Dee) and Jen (played by Erich Gonzales), a young couple who are deeply in love, but their relationship is put to the test when Mark is offered an opportunity to study in Boston, while Jen stays behind in the Philippines. As Mark prepares to leave for the United States, Jen is devastated by the thought of being separated from her boyfriend for an extended period. Despite their love for each other, they decide to make the long-distance relationship work, determined to stay connected through phone calls, video chats, and emails. Jen, who is pursuing her own career in the Philippines, is excited to start her own business, but she also struggles with the idea of being responsible for themselves and their future together. Meanwhile, in Boston, Mark faces his own set of challenges. He begins to navigate the unfamiliar city, where he has to adapt to a new culture, make new friends, and complete his coursework. Despite the initial struggles, Mark settles into his new life and starts to see the world in a different perspective. He begins to appreciate the opportunities that this new experience has brought him, including the chance to meet new people, learn new skills, and discover new interests. However, as the months go by, Mark starts to feel the pangs of homesickness and loneliness. He misses Jen and the familiarity of his life back in the Philippines. He also struggles with the pressure to meet new people and start a new life, while trying to balance his relationship with Jen over the phone. Mark starts to question whether the long-distance relationship is sustainable, and whether the distance between them is making things worse. On the other hand, Jen is facing her own set of challenges in the Philippines. She has to deal with the stress of running her business, managing her finances, and coping with the pressure to succeed. She also struggles with the feeling of being left behind, and the fear that Mark might forget about her or move on to someone else. As the distance between them grows, Jen starts to feel isolated and alone, wondering if she will ever be reunited with Mark. Throughout the movie, the couple's relationship is put to the test as they navigate the challenges of long-distance love. They have to rely on technology to stay connected, and they have to make sacrifices for each other. They also have to confront their own personal demons, fears, and doubts, in order to strengthen their relationship. Ultimately, Mark and Jen's love for each other is put to the ultimate test when they decide to take a leap of faith and visit each other. Mark travels back to the Philippines, and Jen meets him at the airport with a bouquet of flowers. In a heartwarming moment, they share a kiss, and it's clear that their love has survived the distance. Through Mark and Jen's story, the movie explores the complexities of long-distance relationships, and the challenges that come with them. It shows that even in the face of adversity, love can conquer all, and that true love is worth fighting for.
