Plot

In the neon-lit, rain-soaked streets of Los Angeles, Christmas Eve is not a night for celebration for Sin-Dee, a working girl struggling to make ends meet as a sex worker. But as she steps out of the rehabilitation center where she spent the last 28 days, her life is turned upside down. Her boyfriend, Chester, has not only failed to visit her during her incarceration, but he's also been unfaithful behind her back. Sin-Dee's world is shattered, and she's determined to get to the truth. Sin-Dee, along with her best friend Alexandra, sets out on a mission to confront Chester and uncover the identity of the mystery woman who stole his heart while she was away. Their rip-roaring adventure takes them through the vibrant streets of Los Angeles, navigating a kaleidoscope of subcultures and characters. From the Armenian community to the sex trade, no stone is left unturned as Sin-Dee and Alexandra's search for answers leads them into the lives of others. Their first stop is the family-owned Donelton's Donuts, where Alexandra works, and it's there that they run into Dinah, a trans sex worker with an unshakeable confidence and a wit sharp enough to cut through any situation. Dinah, sensing Sin-Dee's distress, offers them some sage advice: to never let a man get away with hurting them, and to always take care of themselves first. Dinah's words of wisdom serve as a beacon for Sin-Dee and Alexandra as they embark on their journey to confront Chester. As they delve deeper into the sex trade, they encounter a plethora of characters, each with their own stories and struggles. They meet Razmik, the Armenian family man who's been unfaithful to his wife, and his family, who are grappling with the repercussions of his infidelity. The family's struggles serve as a poignant reminder of the universal nature of heartache and betrayal. The contrast between Razmik's seemingly mundane suburban life and the world of sin and redemption Sin-Dee and Alexandra inhabit adds a layer of complexity to the narrative. Their odyssey also takes them to the red-light district, where they encounter a bevy of sex workers, each with their own agendas and motivations. There's Ruby, a trans sex worker with a penchant for drama, and James, a sex addict struggling to come to terms with his own desires. Through these encounters, the film skillfully navigates the complexities of the sex trade, highlighting the resilience and strength of the women involved. As Sin-Dee and Alexandra's investigation unfolds, they begin to expose the darker side of Chester's infidelity. They uncover that the mysterious woman is none other than Jasmine, Razmik's wife, and that their affair has led to a series of tragic events. Through a series of flashbacks, the film reveals the intricacies of the affair, showcasing the devastating consequences of infidelity and the damage it can cause to individuals and families. Sin-Dee's world, already shattered by Chester's betrayal, is further complicated by the revelation of Jasmine's true identity. As the truth begins to unravel, Sin-Dee's anger and frustration boil over, threatening to consume her. In a climactic confrontation, Sin-Dee confronts Chester, demanding to know why he broke her trust. His dismissive response only fuels her anger, leading to a dramatic showdown that will change the course of their lives forever. Ultimately, the film is a testament to the resilience and strength of women like Sin-Dee, who, despite the trials and tribulations they face, refuse to be broken. Through its unflinching portrayal of the sex trade and the complexities of human relationships, Tangerine offers a raw and unvarnished look at the lives of those on the fringes of society. In the end, it's a story about redemption, forgiveness, and the unbreakable bonds of friendship that can see us through even the darkest times.

Unexpectedly good. I'm really curious how the director got to know this community. The positioning of transgender prostitutes usually aims to garner sympathy, but the director refuses to do that, portraying them as bitchy, messy, tearing each other apart, and shameless to the end, which is actually quite endearing!

Shot entirely on three iPhones, this is an LGBT indie film bursting with raw energy. The tangerine-tinted cinematography and relentless soundtrack perfectly complement the bullet-speed dialogue and non-stop drama. It's hard to believe a straight man directed this – the level of shade and drama is interstellar!!!
