Thank You for Smoking

Plot

Here is the movie summary: Thank You for Smoking is a satirical comedy that tells the story of Nick Naylor, a smooth-talking spin doctor who works for Big Tobacco. Despite being a member of a group called the Academy of Nicotine Research (ANR), Nick's main priority is to protect the interests of his clients and ensure that smoking remains a legal activity in America. Nick's personal life is complicated by his 12-year-old son, Joey, whom he is determined to raise as a role model, despite his own questionable morals. When a new anti-smoking campaign begins to gain traction, Nick sees an opportunity to promote the benefits of tobacco and fight back against the anti-smoking lobby. He becomes embroiled in a series of absurd and hilarious situations as he attempts to spin the truth about smoking and its effects on public health. Along the way, Nick's integrity is put to the test as he faces off against a zealous activist named Polly Bailey (played by Kathryn Hahn), who is determined to prove that second-hand smoke is a deadly threat. As Nick navigates the treacherous world of tobacco politics, he must also confront his own personal demons and learn to balance his professional ambitions with his role as a father. The film is full of witty one-liners and clever satire, making it both entertaining and thought-provoking. Ultimately, Thank You for Smoking is a commentary on the power of spin and the importance of honesty in the face of adversity.

8/10. The linguistic gymnastics are absolutely exhilarating; it seems a formidable knowledge base is essential for the debate profession. Employing the perspective of a "villain" not only preempts the potential for excessive preaching often associated with politically correct subjects, but also remarkably imbues the sharp, cynical commentary with the wholesome objective of setting a positive paternal example for his son. Truly magical. @2014-06-04 01:55:25

Logically sound, with a solid script and top-notch satire, the film champions the idea that "I don't need to prove I'm right, I just need to prove you're wrong." A classic film about sophistry, it uses the issue of cigarettes and health to explore freedom and morality. Interestingly, despite the subject matter being cigarettes, the film doesn't feature a single smoking scene. @2017-08-25 00:44:38

I know smoking is wrong, but it's my job. Failing to convince you to smoke is my failure.

"Nick Naylor's devilish charm and quick wit make him a compelling anti-hero in Thank You for Smoking, a dark comedy that lampoons the tobacco industry. As a shrewd spin-doctor, he orchestrates a public relations dance to sway public opinion in favor of Big Tobacco, all while navigating the complexities of being a role model for his young son. Aaron Eckhart shines in this biting satire, bringing a depth and humor to a character that is both despicable and likable, making for a wildly entertaining and thought-provoking ride."
