The Blackening
Plot
As the sun dips below the horizon on a remote lake, seven friends from different walks of life converge on a secluded cabin for a weekend getaway. The atmosphere is lively, with laughter and music filling the air as they reunite after years apart. However, their camaraderie is short-lived, as the group soon discovers that they are not alone in the woods. A mysterious figure, driven by a dark vendetta, has been tracking them. As the body count rises, the friends realize they must rely on their collective street smarts and knowledge of horror movies to survive the night. But as the tension builds and paranoia sets in, it becomes clear that this killer is not just any ordinary psychopath. The group's dynamics are put to the test as old rivalries and secrets surface, threatening to tear them apart at the most critical moment. As they try to outsmart their tormentor, they also must confront their own personal demons and come to terms with the darkness lurking within themselves. With the cabin's defenses breached and no escape from the relentless killer, the friends are forced to band together in a desperate bid for survival. But as the hours tick by, it becomes increasingly clear that not everyone will make it out alive. Can they use their knowledge of horror tropes to turn the tables on their tormentor, or will they become just another gruesome statistic? The Blackening is a thrilling ride that delves into the darker aspects of human nature, where survival depends on wit, cunning, and a healthy dose of movie trivia.

I was genuinely dying of laughter.

Unexpectedly hilarious! The point isn't about subverting the tropes, because after all these years, meta-horror has almost become a trope in itself. Instead, it's the perfectly calibrated, densely packed jokes built on Black social stereotypes that shine. It's almost like a stand-up comedy show with a plot, making it incredibly enjoyable to watch. The "eye talking" scene had me dying! While watching, I kept wondering if my friends and I would be this quippy if we were in a similar situation – and the answer is definitely yes! That's just how real people react.

Such an adorable horror flick! Seriously, can everyone just admit they've seen *Friends* already? (●'◡'●)

Pretty funny, but doesn't quite go for the jugular.

Calling out the low scores for what they are: thinly veiled discrimination. Don't hide behind bad ratings to push your agenda. This is a Chinese platform, so feel free to be openly discriminatory – there won't be any consequences for you clowns anyway. 🤡

"The Blackening" cleverly subverts traditional horror movie tropes, infusing the genre with witty humor and sharp social commentary. As the seven black friends navigate the treacherous cabin, they cleverly exploit the killer's reliance on horror movie cliches, using their collective street smarts to stay one step ahead. With its self-aware humor and biting satire, "The Blackening" is a refreshing take on the horror genre.
