The Bricklayer

Plot

John Creasy, a former CIA operative known for his exceptional skills as a "bricklayer," meaning his talent for taking out enemies without being seen or leaving evidence, is living a quiet life under an assumed identity. He is approached by CIA Deputy Director, Robert Halpern, who informs him that his expertise is needed in a highly sensitive case. As Creasy is lured out of retirement, he is told that numerous foreign journalists have been assassinated across the globe, with the U.S. being framed for each crime. The situation becomes highly volatile as the international community begins to unite against the U.S., placing immense pressure on President Thompson, who, in panic, orders the CIA to find and stop the killer before it's too late. The CIA knows that finding the perpetrator will be extremely challenging, if not impossible, without Creasy's particular skillset. His expertise in handling clandestine operations and ability to think critically, combined with his unwavering dedication to the cause, makes him the best candidate for the job. As Creasy returns to the United States, he is reimmersed into his old world. He encounters his former colleagues and is briefed on the intricacies of the situation. The CIA has gathered intelligence that suggests the assassin is targeting foreign journalists working on sensitive topics. It becomes apparent that the true motive behind these killings lies in a web of deceit, with many powerful players involved, including corrupt government officials and organized crime syndicates. Creasy is tasked with infiltrating the inner circle of the assassin and identifying potential accomplices. His first mission leads him to Paris, where a high-profile murder occurs during a press conference. From the available evidence, it appears the CIA is in the clear, but further investigation reveals some discrepancies that point to the agency's involvement. It is here that Creasy first lays eyes on the assassin, who is revealed to be extremely skilled and always manages to stay one step ahead of the authorities. With Paris providing a crucial lead, Creasy delves deeper into the world of espionage, using his skills to evade detection and remain hidden in the shadows. He works closely with a small team of trusted operatives, using them to gather valuable information and stay ahead of the assassin. Meanwhile, he begins to see parallels between the situation and his own dark past. Flashbacks reveal the trauma and the emotional scars he suffered after his first mission, and how that experience continues to haunt him. As the stakes grow higher, Creasy is forced to confront the possibility that his own past could hold the key to stopping the killer. Delving deeper into his memories, he uncovers the truth behind his former life, shedding light on the events that shaped him into the man he is today. These revelations force him to confront his demons, helping him gain a renewed perspective on his life and the world around him. In a gripping turn of events, Creasy's investigation takes him to several countries, as he tracks down leads and pieces together the mysterious events surrounding the assassination. His encounters become increasingly fraught, with the assassin always seeming to one step ahead. Yet, his unwavering resolve and sharp instincts lead him to uncover crucial evidence that finally unravels the intricate web of the conspiracy. Through a series of intense showdowns and cleverly concealed clues, Creasy finally identifies the mastermind behind the killings: a powerful and cunning figure with deep connections to both the intelligence services and the world of organized crime. The figure, who remains shrouded in mystery until the very end, uses their vast network to orchestrate global chaos, forcing Creasy to use all his skills and ingenuity to stay alive. Ultimately, after a long and arduous journey, Creasy confronts the assassin in a tense and suspenseful finale. In a stunning twist, the assassin is revealed to be none other than his former partner, Rachel, whose life has taken a tragic turn due to personal losses and emotional scars stemming from their past missions together. As the world watches, Creasy and Rachel engage in a brutal confrontation. His checkered past finally catches up to him, forcing him to make the ultimate choice – between redemption and destruction. Creasy's actions have far-reaching consequences, shaping the course of history and saving millions of lives from the brink of chaos. With the crisis averted and the world breathing a collective sigh of relief, Creasy steps back into the shadows, his reputation forever changed. Having confronted his demons and overcome the darkness of his past, he emerges as a man reborn, forever haunted by the memories of the events he experienced, yet empowered to make amends and forge a new path forward.

Way below expectations. Such a promising dystopian theme was wasted. The plot is incredibly dragged out, with a solid hour and a half of foreplay leading to a mere 10-minute "escape" climax. When the protagonist asks why they chose a black person, the response "to become faster and stronger" is a complete cop-out, forcing a clumsy explanation based on race and skin color. The only redeeming quality is the black actor's decent performance. Also, they used the core idea from "The Skeleton Key." Did they even pay for the rights?

Knowing there's a third vote makes me want to vote for Obama again. Who knows, maybe Obama himself had surgery in their house.

This flick is insane... a pseudo-horror, real comedy that completely exposes America's racial tensions. You HAVE to watch it in a place like West Philly with a packed house of Black folks – a truly once-in-a-lifetime viewing experience. The ending? The crowd went wild. If I were white, I'd be terrified...
