The Drop

In the Ukrainian-American community of Brooklyn, the streets are lined with small bars, delis, and restaurants that cater to the diverse residents. Amidst this vibrant backdrop, Bob Saginowski, played by Tom Hardy, tries to navigate his life, living in a damp and rundown apartment. Bob's main source of income comes from his job at a funeral home, where he dresses the deceased in their finest attire for their final sendoff. However, Bob's life takes an unexpected turn when his cousin Marcin, played by Gleeson, dies under mysterious circumstances. In a desperate attempt to hold onto Marcin's bar, Civic Tavern, Bob takes on the responsibility of taking care of it. Civic has become a crucial hangout spot for the neighborhood's residents, and Bob sees it as a way to honor Marcin's memory. Things become complicated when Tommys (real name Todd Duryea, played by Anthony Bourdain) a hood attached to Marcin shows up dead in the bar's basement after the armed robbery Bob stopped from progressing. Despite the commotion and chaos, Bob decides to let the situation go and takes in the $10,000 given to him by the hood to minimize his involvement. However, things take a turn for the worse when a police officer named Torres, played by John Ortiz, is dispatched to the scene. Officer Torres is determined to get to the bottom of the crime, and his inquiries put Bob in a precarious position. The investigation reveals that Bob had possession of a large sum of money given to him by the hood, and he is now seen as an essential witness in the case. As Officer Torres digs deeper into the case, he starts to question Bob about his association with Nadia, played by Noomi Rapace, a cheeky and resourceful woman he met in a bar. Although Bob is torn between his loyalty to Marcin and his growing crush on Nadia, he cannot resist his admiration for her and her determination to live life on her own terms – a stark contrast to the confines of their neighborhood. As tensions rise between Bob, Officer Torres, Nadia, and the hood's associates, it becomes clear that nothing in this world is as it seems – everyone's secrets are hidden beneath their seemingly innocent facades. The neighborhood's quiet routine is disrupted by the sound of gunfire, police sirens blasting through the night, and whispers filled with dread and secrets. As Bob walks through the streets, carefully avoiding his fellow residents, suspicion seems to seep from every corner of this little world. Bob becomes increasingly entangled in Officer Torres's investigation and Nadia's affairs. Despite Nadia's loyalty to some small extent, and some uneasy conversations with Officer Torres that seems more to be a verbal ritual then physical show of intent Bob finds himself pursued by desperate hood accomplices. He's seen running wildly through bar and streets - finally all evidence of a break down in his sanity. Little do we notice - the desperate running really just made for a life he refuses to live - hence in the end, his efforts are little more than an emotional purging. In the end, Bob turns in the stolen $10,000 by handing it to Nadia, and she passes it on to her nephew, effectively removing the incriminating evidence from his hands. As the police investigation concludes, Bob receives a visit from Officer Torres, who now sees Bob differently – not as a suspect but as a witness, an acquaintance, and an actual neighbor. With relief in his voice, Bob thanks Officer Torres for his understanding, allowing Bob a moment of breathing room. From the rooftops to the streets of Brooklyn, it's all but visible that no matter the struggles, these city dwellers find themselves etched in this space.
