The Garfield Movie

Plot

Garfield, the lovable and obese tabby cat, star of the iconic comic strip created by Jim Davis, finally gets his chance in the spotlight in the 2004 live-action film adaptation directed by Peter Hewitt. Based on the beloved character's adventures, the movie delivers a dose of fun, action, and humor as it follows Garfield through his wild outdoor escapade. Garfield's lazy and indulgent life in the Richardson household with owner Jon Arbuckle and Jon's dog Odie is disrupted by an unexpected visit from his long-lost father, Vic. Unbeknownst to Garfield, Vic has been living a street-smart life, often getting by with his cunning and resourcefulness. Initially, Vic's intentions seem benevolent, as he reunites with his estranged son and wishes him a happy birthday, but it's soon revealed that Vic has ulterior motives and a plan in motion. Vic, it turns out, is involved in a high-stakes heist alongside his crew, who are attempting to steal the prized Foodini's Pizzeria's famous lasagna – no less than fifty pounds of lasagna. Sensing an opportunity to claim his prize, the real reason for his visit, Vic convinces Garfield and Odie to join his crew in exchange for promising to leave Jon's life once and for all. Initially hesitant, Garfield is eventually convinced by Vic's promise of unlimited lasagna and the promise of joining his wild, street-wise lifestyle. Before he knows it, Garfield is swept off his high life, venturing into the wilds of downtown Muncie, Indiana, where Vic's street gang operates. This unexpected turn of events yields numerous comedic moments as the socialite-turned-outlaw Garfield struggles to adapt to the harsh realities of street life, far removed from the confines of his indoor paradise. The group, consisting of street-savvy members Vito and Eduardo, embark on a series of increasingly chaotic events as they navigate through the city to breach Foodini's Pizzeria, a seemingly impenetrable fortress designed to safeguard their most precious commodity, the lasagna. Their initial attempts at the pizzeria prove futile, marked by comical mishaps and an assortment of hilarious antics, which inadvertently reveals their ultimate goal. Throughout the film, Garfield's struggles provide a glimpse into his inner workings, and audiences are given a better perspective on his motivations for being an indoor cat. His attempts to live a life similar to Vic's also reveal the vastly different personalities of the two fathers, with Vic's rough and reckless nature juxtaposed with the character's existing carefree, indulgent personality. In stark contrast to Garfield's newfound street savvy lifestyle, is the life that Jon Arbuckle leads in quiet, suburban bliss. Jon's romantic life also takes a turn as he expresses love to Dr. Lynn, only for her to be interested in him. Their awkward interactions alongside the animated discussions between Jon and his dog Odie create humor and provide additional layers to Garfield's character. As the team inches closer to their elusive target, old alliances are put to the test, and original friendships are forged. Ultimately, as the gang infiltrates the pizzeria, the mayhem reaches its peak, with wildly unexpected outcomes that test Garfield's true resolve and loyalty to either his family life or embracing his wild side. Garfield the movie unravels into a non-stop ride filled with slapstick humor and comical stunts, resulting in the grand heist of a lifetime for all parties involved.

Definitely geared towards kids, essentially following a familiar story template (like those spy-team movies). But hey, there's a bit of childhood nostalgia involved, and who doesn't love this lasagna-loving fat cat?

"I do all my own stunts, just like Tom Cruise!" The farm heist and the final train sequence pay homage to Mission: Impossible, and the drone flight is accompanied by the Top Gun theme song. The director clearly loves Tom Cruise. Oh, and Daniel Day-Possum! Hilarious. It's more absurd and entertaining than I expected – loads of laughs. And Odie even transforms into a super-powered Gromit.

Slapping a cat skin on a middle-aged white guy's story doesn't automatically make it work. While some jokes are genuinely funny, I'm just inherently allergic to father-son narratives. "Fatherly love" you can't feel just isn't good enough. Also, where did the mother character disappear to AGAIN? A male cat raising a kitten just doesn't make sense, and the character of Vic could easily have been replaced with a robust female cat.

The funniest part is definitely all the cats in the animal shelter having a distinct Black accent...

This movie is uninspired. I'd sooner believe Garfield's mom came to visit him.
