The Mighty Peking Man

Plot
In the early 1970s, the film industry was thriving, churning out action-packed blockbusters that captivated audiences worldwide. Among these was 'The Mighty Peking Man', a 1977 Hong Kong-American co-production directed by Meng Hua Ho and starring Shang Kuan, Hsieh Meng, and Wei Pingao. This fantasy-infused adventure delves deep into the jungle, blending elements of drama, romance, and spectacle to create an unforgettable cinematic experience. The story commences with a group of fortune hunters in Hong Kong learning about a ten-story-tall monster ape, dubbed 'Utam' or 'Peking Man', said to inhabit the Himalayas. This creature, supposedly the largest of its kind, is rumored to possess incredible strength and ferocity. Intrigued by the prospect of capturing such an extraordinary beast, the group sets off towards the remote Indian jungle, fueled by visions of fame and fortune. However, their initial enthusiasm begins to wane as obstacles impede their progress. A series of misadventures, including encounters with ferocious wild animals and perilous treacherous terrain, gradually whittles down their numbers. Those who persist eventually find themselves left with a lone adventurer, Johnny, portrayed by the veteran Hong Kong actor Shang Kuan. His motivation for pursuing Utam is less about wealth and more about his troubled past - a broken heart that he's desperate to heal, both mentally and emotionally. In stark contrast to the chaos that preceded him, Johnny enters the idyllic jungle where Utam resides, an oasis untouched by human conflict. His path leads him to a beautiful and captivating woman named Samantha, who has lived amongst the trees with Utam for years. Samantha, portrayed by Hsieh Meng, is an enigmatic figure, the sole survivor of a plane crash that claimed her parents' lives. Utam, sensing her vulnerability, took her in and cared for her over the years, raising her alongside the jungle environment with the care of a guardian. As Johnny and Samantha grow closer, their initial apprehension about each other gradually dissolves, and romance blossoms. Despite the cultural and social disparities between them, they form an undeniable bond, one that transcends time and space. Yet, this blissful existence is short-lived as Johnny implores Samantha to encourage Utam to accompany him back to Hong Kong, promising a better future for the creature. This invitation, however well-intentioned, inadvertently sets off a chain of events that would forever alter the lives of everyone involved. Lu Tien, a ruthless entrepreneur, seizes upon the opportunity to harness the commercial value of Utam's enormous size and strength. Sensing an opportunity to make a killing, he assumes control of the situation, ultimately reducing Utam to a mere spectacle - a freak to be showcased in a gaudy traveling circus. As fate would have it, the once-pristine jungle, an environment in perfect symbiosis with nature, is torn asunder by Lu Tien's callous manipulation. Utam's deep affinity for Samantha, forged over the years through unbreakable trust, is tested as the creature, now an unthinking beast, succumbs to the exploitation inflicted upon it. This sequence of unfortunate events culminates in chaos and destruction as Utam wreaks havoc on the city of Hong Kong, a city overwhelmed by the sheer scale and fury of the beast.
