It's quite a sorrowful experience. Having not read the original novel, I went in blind, and unfortunately, I couldn't make heads or tails of it. All the men looked the same, sporting thick beards and bushy hair, making it impossible to distinguish them by the end, and I had no clue what they were doing. To add insult to injury, the subtitles were incredibly rough, making my situation even worse. Watching it felt like a complete waste of time. The only redeeming qualities were its historical feel and the decent use of the subdued, yellowish filter.

[B-] Thoroughly enjoyed it! A high-quality commercial blockbuster adapted from a local classic with a star-studded local cast is already a pleasant surprise. Every action scene with handheld long takes is a highlight. Seriously, this director should helm an Avengers movie. The long take of the four musketeers' first gathering is better than what Whedon or the Russos could do.

Finally, the French realized they had to film their own masterpiece themselves, and our old Paris is just so authentic. When will the next installment be? 2023 is truly the year of super-long trailers.

6. 0 - A bit of fun. The action sequences are relatively well-crafted (albeit with overused long take setups). The story feels like it's sometimes sped up and at other times needlessly dragging, and then it ends on a cliffhanger at the most exciting point. But at least the casting director really understands French actors: Louis Garrel as the King, Vicky Krieps as the Queen, Eva Green as the villain, Romain Duris as the charming rogue, François Civil as the rugged country bumpkin, Vincent Cassel as the melancholy old man... it's definitely leaning into the stereotypes.

In an era dominated by short videos, it's truly commendable to see a classic novel & costume drama adapted with such a grounded and faithful approach, avoiding flashy gimmicks. Looking forward to the next installment! The casting of the Duke of Buckingham and Louis XIII with Latin features, and a lackluster portrayal of the Queen's presence are regrettable.

"The Three Musketeers" is a thrilling ride of loyalty, betrayal, and swashbuckling action. D'Artagnan's fiery spirit and the ragtag trio of former legends make for an unforgettable adventure, but beware—the plot twists are as sharp as their swords!"
