The Voyeurs

Plot

The Voyeurs is a 2021 psychological thriller film centered around the lives of two couples living in a desirable Manhattan high-rise apartment building. Pippa, played by Sydney Sweeney, is an aspiring photographer who shares an apartment with her boyfriend, Thomas, portrayed by Justice Smith. This high-rise provides them with the perfect blend of style, security, and perhaps, the chance to gaze into the intimate lives of their neighbors. As the newlywed couple settles into their new life, they discover that their apartment is equipped with floor-to-ceiling windows that provide an ideal view into the adjacent apartment, home to the enigmatic and stunning couple, Pippa's and Thomas's opposites, so to speak – they share a similar name but not the same fate: Bonnie, a high-powered art dealer played by Natasha Liu Bordizzo, and her boyfriend, Chad, an actor, played by Ben Hardy. Early on, Pippa seems consumed by Bonny's vivacious and captivating lifestyle: spontaneous beach trips, exquisite dinner parties, and a seemingly perfect romance. Fascinated by this world that appears so idyllic on the surface, Pippa and Thomas start to weave an intricate narrative of Bonnie's and Chad's whirlwind romance. They believe this marriage to be a marriage of convenience – both trying to navigate their careers in the cutthroat competitive urban environment. Bonnie seems intent on maintaining a stunning facade, and the speculation is rife when the couple gets into heated arguments. This domestic discord slowly starts to unravel the initially seamless dream of Pippa and Thomas as voyeurs, taking an ever-deeper descent into Bonnie's and Chad's private world. Pippa becomes increasingly enthralled and dissatisfied with her own stagnant relationship. Feeling bored with her sedate and unremarkable life, she finds herself unable to resist the fervent thrill of experiencing Bonny and Chad's relationship directly from her window. Noting a glimpse of Chad's alleged infidelity, a chance that this could confirm her suspicions, Pippa starts recording all her observations from the window with an instinct that encourages relentless curiosity and an unstoppable need to share these recordings on her personal journal on the web known as vlog. Passionate but misjudged, Pippa develops her ambitions for an esteemed vlogging channel along with her knack of engaging story-telling – documenting her discoveries with painstaking thought and unrivaled fervor, that shows unapologetic candor into the unsightly, supposedly unsightly chaos of Bonny and Chad, hoping that online influence could offer the fame and creative boost she longs for so earnestly. Bonnie's descent into anguish grows from escalating arguments with Chad. Pippa keeps observing without letting up, knowing that viewing the struggles might guide her quest for digital stardom. Observing Bonnie and Chad, an insatiable voyeur, Pippa not only sees her current life laid bare but also wishes her to embody an elegant presence, far outweighing reality, creating two dissimilar paths intertwined with intrigue and desperation. The situation slowly becomes oppressive as Bonnie senses they're under the scrutiny of their neighbors, experiencing a haunting blend of feelings. A psychological conundrum arises when Pippa's keen observations have started to blur her inseparable border with reality. Engulfed by an impossible yearning to feel empowered and connected, she, by no means, understands that it's an invitation down a hazardous route where the lives observed are severely influenced by an addictive kind of peering. Thomas and Pippa consistently exchange fervent dialogues over Pippa's passion – the tension between him and Pippa manifests over her increasingly provocative activities. Her ever-increasing obsession remains unclear until this climax, as with the arrival of an unhelpful, unyielding dynamic between Thomas and Pippa – the ultimate threshold for confrontation. The tension is resolved when it comes out in the open that a dreadful crisis faces the marriage between Bonnie and Chad. To their dismay, the couple gets entangled profoundly with sex, passion and addiction: Bonnie falls for another man named Pippa's new boyfriend's doppelgangered individual ex. Pippa manages to uncover the complexity inside Bonny and Chad's beautiful facade and, to great horror, witnesses how deeply unhealthy her life is. As tensions rise within Pippa's world upon witnessing utter chaos enveloping outside her home, insecurities intensify when the emotional disconnections have come up. Thomas starts to wonder if Pippa's voyeuristic disposition is the truth or merely another potential layer of the ever-concealing truth – an all too regular test of their ever-shifting relationship from something idyllic to a tragic crash. It soon becomes apparent that, despite excessive fascination with witnessing other couples' lives unravel, a deeply chaotic and intimate glimpse into some potentially disastrous dimensions is slowly dawning upon her. Upon witnessing a fragile loss of respect taking over their relationship, rather than considering to bring the unwraveling reality to light and explore another reality, the journey takes a grim descent into an unbridled form of terror. In an exploration of deception Pippa reaches the gruesome realization that this all-sawing ambition often had an odd and, after all, hurtful effect on her growing mental fragility making Thomas fearful of Pippa – worried his career longevity is very well threatened in the long run.
