The Whole Nine Yards

The Whole Nine Yards

Plot

James Briggs (played by Gabriel Byrne), a ruthless hitman for the notorious crime lord Jimmy LaMotta (played by Michael McShane), has been granted another opportunity to redeem himself from the consequences of his past actions through cooperation with the FBI. As part of an elaborate witness protection program, he is given a new identity and relocated to the tranquil suburban town of Sunland, California. This new life is supposed to be a fresh start for James, allowing him to leave his violent past behind and live a peaceful existence away from the constant threats of the mob. The authorities have chosen the perfect disguise for James, complete with a new name, Jimmy "Orlando" Civello, and a completely new set of circumstances, including a mundane office job at a printing warehouse. However, this seemingly perfect setup is soon disrupted when a couple of Briggs's neighbors begin to unravel his true identity. Jimmy 'The Tulip' Tulien (played by Bruce Willis), a quirky and eccentric neighbor, has always been fascinated by the peculiar behavior of the Civello family. He notices small inconsistencies in their lives, from their odd behavior to the peculiar security measures they have taken at their home. Jimmy 'The Tulip', an ex-military man turned gardening enthusiast, has a fascination with gardening and a particular hatred for cacti. He sees Briggs's odd behavior as the most compelling mystery in the neighborhood and decides to take things into his own hands. He enlists the help of his eccentric wife, Audrey (played by Sophie Okonedo), and together they begin to subtly pry more information out of Briggs. With his curiosity at an all-time high, Jimmy 'The Tulip' becomes increasingly entangled in Briggs's mysterious past, inadvertently threatening his carefully constructed new identity. His persistence proves to be an unwelcome interruption to Jimmy 'Orlando' Civello's peaceful life. On the other hand, we have Norman Foster (played by Matthew Perry), a timid and somewhat awkward office coworker of Briggs at the printing warehouse, who becomes aware of Civello's true identity but doesn't seem to mind. Norman is initially reluctant to believe that Jimmy 'Orlando' Civello is a notorious hitman but slowly becomes embroiled in the unfolding drama. As Jimmy 'The Tulip' and Norman both dig deeper into Briggs's mysterious past, they inadvertently put Civello in increasingly precarious positions. LaMotta's organization learns about Briggs's betrayal and will stop at nothing to punish him for it, putting him and those around him at significant risk. As tensions rise and danger looms over the Civello household, Briggs is forced to choose between his peaceful new life and the life he left behind as a ruthless hitman. The quiet suburban streets of Sunland become an unlikely battleground for a high-stakes cat and mouse game. In this film of cat and mouse, Briggs is caught in the crosshairs of his past and his present. With the FBI watching from the sidelines, Briggs finds himself trapped in a seemingly impossible situation, as both the mob and his neighbors try to bring him back into the game. Caught in a web of deceit and forced to make difficult choices, Briggs, with his old-school, street-smart attitude, manages to hold on to his new identity despite the odds. The streets of Sunland, once so calm and peaceful, become the stage for a dark and intense confrontation between Briggs's past and present, as well as his neighbors and the law. Ultimately, 'The Whole Nine Yards' is a gripping, dark comedy about a man caught in a life of deception, and the lengths to which he'll go to keep his new identity. The tension builds to a shocking climax as Briggs confronts his past and the people who have invaded his quiet suburban life. This dark comedy offers a fresh and witty perspective on the high-stakes world of organized crime and the lengths to which people will go to keep their secrets safe.
