The Bourne Ultimatum

The Bourne Ultimatum

Plot

Based on the information obtained, Jason Bourne, a once highly skilled assassin, begins to face grave danger once again as he is drawn into the heart of a deceitful organization - The Treadstone Corporation, formerly known as Treadstone, which has upgraded and renamed itself to Blackbriar - an upgraded assassination programme designed to track the operatives, but making them kill themselves at the right time, so they won't talk. The Bourne series has been known for its ability to weave a complex and intriguing narrative, giving viewers the impossible job of disentangling fact from fiction. Director Paul Greengrass with his 2007 rendition of The Bourne Ultimatum masterfully weaves the compelling story line of this particular instalment once again. The seasoned assassin seems to be caught unaware by the reappearance of Simon Ross, a tenacious journalist reporting on Operation Blackbriar in his columns. Ross unwittingly sets off a chain reaction that shakes Bourne out of his staid existence and puts his life back in danger. Simon Ross having stumbled on the clandestine Blackbriar program was relentlessly being hunted down, even all the way to a rooftop by Marshal Kirko, one of its main men, before being shot. Even though at the end only one version of the incident makes it to the media, the main idea gets through to Bourne, which forms the backdrop of this compelling plot. Amidst the danger drawn upon Bourne, in which his memories are finally starting to surface; in an epiphanic experience, a fleeting, yet overwhelming, bout of recollection seems to fall upon this man after Simon Ross reveals his story publicly on a press conference, despite protests from other security persons, and he finds himself to again face some of his experiences past as an underworld assassin. Matthew Pegg, an unspecting agency person had inadvertently started to aid him in this journey by providing proof before being caught in a trap. People close to Bourne start receiving visitations, seemingly intended to remind them of something. It could be seen then that his past and this current endeavour will keep crossing paths throughout his ordeal. Moreover, as he looks deeper, Jason Bourne feels the agony of not knowing where he came from and what triggered off his transformation into the skilled but deadly assassin he is today. Ever more, the blurred lines between reality and fantasy make it hard to separate both situations, while he desperately seeks any new shred of information that could be useful. As Bourne finally starts putting together fragments of his complicated life, The Company's machinations raise the stakes in a series of relentless pursuits, which keep Bourne on his toes. Reining in director Paul Greengrass are skillful stunts, which move forward at an enormous pace to draw the audience in as meticulously choreographed combat sequences unravel and take shape. The combination of slick direction complemented with Matt Damon's consistently intense performance easily grip its fans tightly throughout these high-stakes sequences. Jason Bourne and his enemy, The Company, soon set up a cat and mouse chase which seem impossible for either side to win. Jason, a 'ghost' no more but in the midst of being tracked continuously by agents like Kirko and his cohorts, for something about his face has caught the eye of the Blackbriar officials. Bourne cannot and would not want anyone else to learn about the misdeeds carried out or for that matter being a tool in one of the Company's covert operations. On seeing his nemesis Kirko getting killed but also with a plan seemingly close to his mouth about going after a Treadstone station located below the "Tower" leads to further drama. This sets off Jason's 'ghost' self in him turning up, a fleeting image reminiscent of the 'false' Bourne identity he is struggling to leave behind. Jason has barely escaped after crashing with it in the aftermath of getting over Paul Haggis about suffering memories, in other words, making it to his feet. However, when at a meeting the top brass gathered in the "Tower", before it is all very clear yet, the ominous yet silent leader conveys a glimmering notion that in some secret place, the top persons hold out some answers to Bourne's personal history - Jason was first introduced to Treadstone under the codename 'Alpha'. In turn does this one want to find answers to the painful moments in his past - that so vehemently disrupt this very quiet but exciting existence he lives now. With Bourne at a pace that gets any clue about the root cause of Blackbriar right out from every angle and not far behind on the ground in danger lurking among a crowd before he took his drastic step towards seeking the truth. In this third act of a film loaded with an array of dark dramatic scenes we are left wondering which are real - at the very least it's in desperate pursuit.
