The Call

Plot

The Call is a 2013 American psychological thriller film directed by Brad Anderson, based on the 2006 South Korean film 'The Chaser's' segment 'The Call', which was part of a omnibus film called 'Three'. The film tells the story of two women, both named Jordan Turner (played by Halle Berry in the present day and Abigail Breslin in the past), who are seemingly connected across different timelines. Jordan Turner is a 911 operator and single mother who is dealing with the aftermath of her divorce. Her life seems mundane and uneventful until a serial killer, who she previously convicted of a different charge, reaches out to her claiming he is the one who actually killed his ex-girlfriend, which Jordan had wrongly accused him of. While investigating the murder, Jordan connects with Jordan Turner in the past, played by Abigail Breslin, who is going through her high school years. The Jordan from the past is a high school student who is an outgoing, energetic teenager. However, she is a victim of bullying and sexual abuse and eventually becomes a troubled teenager. As the story unfolds, Jordan Turner is tasked with finding the truth behind the murder, but the closer she gets to revealing it, the more danger she faces from the man she once convicted. He is determined to put an end to her life, just like he had tried to with his ex-girlfriend. Meanwhile, the present-day Jordan Turner, played by Halle Berry, starts experiencing strange visions of Jordan from the past. These visions reveal a life where the high school-aged Jordan was struggling to cope with her past trauma, making it difficult for her to form meaningful relationships. As Jordan's visions intensify, she realizes that she has a crucial connection with the present-day Jordan Turner. As the Jordan from the past experiences severe struggles with her personal demons, her life parallels the life of her older counterpart. She is constantly dealing with the pain and trauma of her past, but in a different way to Jordan Berry - Jordan Turner's visions allow her to see the outcome of her choices and her life. But as the story unfolds, it's clear that the events of the past have shaped the outcome of the present. As Jordan, played by Halle Berry, delves deep into the mystery behind the murder, she realises that her younger self was the only witness to the crime. She realises that the events of the murder occurred exactly 20 years ago and it was a case that she had worked on in her youth as a police officer's assistant. With this newfound understanding, the connections between Jordan from the past and Jordan from the present become clearer. Jordan Turner from the past sees visions of her older counterpart's current life and struggles, but Jordan Berry doesn't know how to communicate with her younger self. The tension builds until the climax of the story when Jordan Turner is threatened by the serial killer, who wants her to keep quiet about the truth behind his past crimes. However, Jordan's visions of her younger self provide her with a different perspective and the knowledge she needs to take the correct course of action. Her newfound understanding of the connection between their two timelines leads her to prevent a tragic event, ultimately changing the course of events that her younger self was powerless to change. By the end of the movie, Jordan has not only saved her younger self from a violent fate but also helped the serial killer receive his due justice. The connections between the two timelines blur as the story draws to a close. Jordan Turner reflects on the lessons that she has learned from her visions, coming to terms with her past traumas and finding a way to heal. As the credits roll, it is clear that Jordan Turner is finally at peace with her past. She is able to form meaningful relationships and has gained closure from the trauma that occurred in her youth. The Call is a gripping and thought-provoking film that explores the connections between past, present, and future and how our choices can impact our lives in ways that we may never fully understand.
