The Mist

Plot
The Mist, a chilling horror film directed by Frank Darabont, is an adaptation of Stephen King's novella of the same name. The movie takes place in the small town of Bridgton, Maine, where a sudden and violent storm brews on the outskirts of town. David Drayton, a commercial illustrator and a single father, is struggling to deal with his divorce and connect with his young son, Billy. As the storm intensifies, David and Billy find themselves trapped in the local grocery store, along with a group of other townspeople seeking refuge from the torrential rain and howling winds. As the storm begins to subside, a dense mist creeps into town, rolling in like a living entity. The mist, devoid of any explanation, blankets the town, leaving the residents with an eerie sense of unease. David and the others, including the grocer, Brent Norton, and a handful of other townspeople, huddle in the grocery store, sharing nervous glances and whispered conversations. At first, the mist is merely an annoyance, obscuring the town's scenic views and cutting visibility to mere feet. However, as the hours tick by, the group begins to realize that something is amiss. Gunshots echo through the night, followed by frantic screams and desperate pleas for help. The store's residents soon discover that the mist harbors unseen terrors, creatures from the otherworld that defy explanation and have a taste for human flesh. The group frays quickly as desperate and panicked individuals succumb to the urge for survival at any cost. Mr. McTeague, a cantankerous old man with an axe to grind, sees the mist as an opportunity for personal vendetta, seeking revenge on those who wronged him. Sandra, a traumatized young woman, descends into madness, losing her grip on reality as the horrors unfold. Other shoppers, trying to put on a brave face, reveal their darkest secrets and fears as desperation takes hold. David's main concern is protecting Billy, his innocent and sensitive son, from the monsters lurking just beyond the store's perimeter. As the hours tick by, the group faces the grueling truth that the creatures in the mist have no intention of sparing human life. Snatches of human screams and moans create a nightmarish atmosphere, adding to the collective terror of the survivors. The interior of the store gradually loses its tenuous sense of stability and normalcy as chaos gives way to bloodlust and primal fear. A young man in the store mentions hearing reports of similar horrors unfolding in nearby grocery stores and people being attacked in streets hidden by the mist. Brent Norton is revealed to be one of the most influential men in the town. Although there are strong intentions of fighting back against the creatures, Brent refuses to act out of self-preservation and fear he may be harmed in the process of trying to fight back. The refusal by Brent for help leaves two members of the store's group left with little choice than to fight back using any necessary force to safeguard themselves against the relentless horrors. As David, emboldened to take charge, attempts to organize a resistance against the creatures, the store is beset by an influx of starving, monstrous entities from beyond the veil of the unknown. The creatures are explained as being creatures from other dimensions where their dimensions have made hostile contact with different living beings and then these otherworldy things got released when an old 'dimension breach' occurred. Through the dark terror that grips their souls, a narrative develops as characters lay dying or deal with the raw truth revealed by the battle the survivors lost with the monstrous invaders from beyond.

Wow, that ending is brutally cold... so the hero survives all those horrors, only to reach a point where he believes there's absolutely no hope left. He murders his companions, and then, in a truly "heroic" decision, he kills his own son to spare him from the monsters. He's ready to face despair alone... and then, the army shows up to rescue them. Seeing that ending, I couldn't help but laugh, it's just such a dark joke. All that suffering, and he couldn't wait just a LITTLE bit longer? Wait until the actual monsters showed themselves, and THEN commit suicide as a last resort? Also, the Old Testament is truly evil and terrifying, but it's also true religion... Finally, that character who should have been ki...

Absolutely brilliant ending, adding two stars! Here's the review: THE MIST – A classic representation of retail investor mentality. When the market first shows signs of decline, they hesitate and miss the optimal exit point. As the index continues to fluctuate and drop, they keep averaging down, getting trapped repeatedly. Finally, they panic and sell off at the bottom, only to find the government steps in with a bailout, triggering a massive reversal!
