The Purge: Election Year

The Purge: Election Year

Plot

The Purge: Election Year, directed by up-and-coming filmmaker James DeMonaco, takes place two years after the events of the first film, The Purge. It is a sequel that explores the concept of the annual 12-hour Purge, where all crimes arelegal, deepening the darkness and unpredictability of the night. The movie revolves around the concept of politics and the will to govern. Leo Barnes played by Frank Grillo, is arguably one of the more sensible characters in the Purge film series. He refused to play by the rules and was vengeful against those responsible for the deadly past of the annual event of Purge, which turned into a bloody riot. As the result of last film's plot, just before the elections, former police sergeant Leo becomes a head of the security for the front-runner presidential candidate, Senator Charlene Roan, played by Elizabeth Mitchell. Senator Charlene Roan, her unique campaign and politics resonate with the concept of annihilating the annual chaos that occurs on the night of the Purge. Charlene has managed to raise her profile on the national platform with great fanfare. Charlene has risen to great heights from the grass root movement in her home state and promises to eradicate the occurrence of the annual riot as her election agenda. She expects an invitation to speak at the National Purge Convention, a potential launch pad to gain momentum for her upcoming presidential campaign. However, for Senator Roan and Leo Barnes, this particular election night takes an unexpected turn. As the night begins with high security at her hotel, a sudden and surprising betray by the government officials tasked to protect the Senator leaves both Leo and Senator Roan forced to be off the secure location of the hotel premises. This is the beginning of the dark, uncertain, thrilling, and often bloody journey that unfolds for the couple in this movie. After being betrayed, they are compelled to fight to make their survival a possibility. Their ordeal becomes a struggle by a figure in an unanticipated adversary, the hidden figures from the U.S. government who in light of this sudden chaos plannedto target Senator Roan. Through the chaos of untold blood and in the midst of roaring firearms, both characters soon form an unpredictable alliance with a cab driver named Faline Pavone. Played by Betty Gabriel, Faye Pavone is only keen on protecting her own interests. Despite their initial awkwardness, a bond eventually forms and Pavone appears to shift her stance for a common bigger goal. Against all who have an intent to kill them, this unlikely trio embark on a chaotic road trip. The Purge: Election Year ends with a mix of chaos and unpredictability, only shedding light on the fact that the country struggles with corruption, fearlessness, and deep-rooted inequality. The deep corruption and violence that permeates through the shadows that lurked in the background – was not something that senator Roan eliminated as envisioned but deepened, as demonstrated by the events unfolding on that night of the event.
